Hi,
Can anyone recommend where I can buy suspension bolts for a T5? I've just paid £75 for 8 bolts at the main stealer (front and rear bush mounting bolts, including the eccentric rears). That made me slightly nauseous and now I've realised I need some pinch bolts for the front struts...
What do people do to make sure they get a safe part without being taken for a ride?
Thanks.
Do they need a vin number to be able to find them Davey? 🤪....
Of course they do, It seems that is just how their system is set up .
Back in the day when i used to work for a main dealer parts dept i used to know the common part numbers off the top of my head .
I struggle to remember my own birthday these days mind you ☺
I've spoken to the main dealer who asked whether I needed the nuts. My castings which clamp the suspension struts are threaded, and the original bolts do not have nuts. It may be that the units have been redesigned. Does anyone have any experience of this? I don't want to change half the van to get this job done, but it needs to be safe...
Yes - I think earlier T5s, the nut/thread was attached to the hub and later vans it was a more traditional nut and bolt straight through the hub. I'm not sure if its possible but I'd be tempted to grind off the threaded section (or clean it out if its within the hub) and replace with the more modern setup.
From what I can remember, they didn't. Walked into the Service dept at VW Commercials West Yorkshire and asked for those and got them over the counter. Think that was the week before/after I went in for some OEM wheel bolts and they initially quoted me retail price for them and then brought out a bucket of delivery mileage ones they'd removed from vans and replaced with lockers and let me grab 20 for nowt
I took an old bolt to the main dealer today and compared it to the new type, identical. The bolts are the same, but on more recent vans the strut clamps have been modified and a nut is needed. I've fitted four new bolts (£17). To clear out the threads, I cut a small slot in one of the old bolts and ran it in an out of the hole. Also, if you are fitting new struts and, like me working on axle stands, good luck, it's hard work. I used a webbing strap to hang the swivel hub off the new strut, and blocks of wood to support. Make sure you really clear out any rust from the strut clamps using a flap sanding wheel. It's back breaking work, and you don't want to do it twice when your realise the strut won't go in the clamp. If you look on youtube, there are pretty videos showing you how easy it is if you have a vehicle lift. Don't be fooled.
The pinch bolts are part number P VN 102 096 05. The guy in the main dealer was under instruction not to give part numbers out (?!), but it is written on the invoice.
Thanks for that 👍 .
Doesnt make any sense why they would hide part numbers 🤷♂️.
Unless people are going in for numbers and prices and then going elsewhere to actually purchase them .
