Hi, i have a 2.5tdi engine in which the crankshaft has snapped im going to swap the engine but i want to swap it too a 1.9tdi because it will lower my insurance, just wondered what engines im able to put in because finding a t5 engine with all the ecu and wiring looms is proving to be difficult and expensive as im only young and cant afford a newish engine. Im thinking of a vw bora 1.9tdi. Just wondered what your opinions would be on this. :)

Sorry to be a prophet of doom.

Anything is possible. However, the 1.9 uses a 5-speed gearbox & even if you try fitting a Bora unit the gear ratio's will be all wrong.

It would be more "do-able" if you had a complete T5 engine/box/radiators/ECU's, but a whole lot of work.

As one of our members said recently, a 2.5 can be effectively written off if the engine goes bang.

As it happens I do have a complete running but very high mileage 2.5 engine which is a bit "chuffy" which may help - is yours an AXD or what ?

Engine wise you could put a PD130 in it relatively easily. Personally I’d avoid the T5 104 lump and go for the 130. It’s a straight swap but you’ll need to look into the gearbox side of things as you’re currently running a 2.5 setup. You could get a second hand 1.9 t5 box reconned and stick the longer fifth gear in whilst it’s being done. You’d make the same power -or more if you pick a box setup thatcan handle it- as the 2.5 but with far less reliability issues.

If you had a 1.9 already you can keep the OE loom, clocks keys & ECU and then flash a map onto it. With having a 2.5 base I think you might have to use clocks keys & ecu from the donor, which is much more work. Gearbox wise it’s not a straight OEM fit and requires fabrication to make it fit. From memory ASZ, ARL, AVF, AWX don’t fit as well and need ancillaries moving to prevent fouling fan housing slam panel & other bits.
