Hello VW world,

Looking through Syncros can see that some mount spare wheel on rear door - is this the only sure sign of a rear diff lock being installed on the vehicle or not a reliable guide ?

thanks

Not really. It was an option as far as I'm aware. Maybe on the Caravelle perhaps but on the transporter, the spare wheel was attached inside the van. My mate's SWB Syncro Caravelle has the OEM rear carrier and locker. Our LWB Caravelle in Norway has no locker and the spare wheel is mid-ships under the van.

It's a bonus if you find one that's got it fitted as it's not a simple job to retrofit. We're having the internal brackets re-fabricated so I can fit the OEM carrier on mine properly.

Only sure way to tell if a van has a rear difflock is to get under the van and look at the diff BUT there should be little control panel in the cab under the heater dials to operate the lock.

Not all syncro have difflock (mine doesn't) so your trying to see if it's a syncro from a picture then (apart the obv. Rear diff) syncro decal on tailgate and wings and a small grille on the front bumper... and swing arm wheel carrier...... all these can be added though.

Matt where you getting the brackets fab,d? And how much? I tried to find some for mine but could only find swb ones..... that I couldn't afford (lol)

For the OEM rear carrier, why do you think the SWB is different. It's the internal supports where the carrier mounts to the chassis. There are two types but only the latches differ. I've ended up with one of each and a bag full of brackets. My mate found a place that will reproduce them. It's a slow process though

As I understand it the lwb top bracket is larger than the swb as the d pillar skin is further apart(?)

701813914 SWB
721813914 LWB

17 vs 17a

Hopefully I'm mistaken (though will be annoyed as I passed up on a d pillar from a swb a few years ago
..... but knowing my luck/skill level I'd have lost an arm trying to get the brackets out!)
