T4 Dashboard mod

I've just bought my t4 and was going to replace the tape deck stereo for a new one but the purist in me kind of wants to keep it but add underneath a vw compatible cd player.

My T4 is an '03 and above the heater controls their is room on the dash for a cd player, at present above the heater controls is an almost useless small trough to keep pens or something. I was wondering whether their was an alternative heating control panel which can be bought; one with a stereo housing in it rather than this useless trough, or, a new heater control panel that then left a big enough gap to fit a stereo housing then this would allow me to fit a VW cd player to link in with my tape deck and keep it as original as poss. Not sure whether any t4's came with this compatible cd player as standard so not sure whether this 'panel' exists

I have seen some mods people put underneath the dash which can house stereos but I don't want to go down that route

Does anyone know of such a heater control panel which has a stereo housing in it or know somebody/somewhere I can get this modification done?

Cheers

Cheers for that info nicklouse

The place I want to create an opening for the cd player is underneath the existing stereo and not above. There's room for it but the panel where where the climate controls are would need adjusting/replacing to then create a new opening for a cd unit

I'm being a bit daft I know because it would be much easier to just buy a new stereo and fit into the existing slot but I want to keep the original vw stereo if possible and not too much of a headache

The dial surround from a mk4 golf will fit over your existing dials will look stock and give you the space your after. I have looked into doing this so can fit a double din stero. I also have a 2003 van
Hope this helps.

Pretty sure there is nothing in the way there I fixed my hered controls this afternoon so had it all out don't remember seeing anything else apart from the control wires and cables for the heaters.

As Nicklouse says, above the heater controls and directly behnd where that "little trough" is a stell bar that will get in the way - that is one reason why the little trough is so shallow!
Rejgging the airvents to use space above is the better option if you want a double-din or stacked setup
I dn't know if anyone has moved the heater controls on a T4? I am not sure they can be moved successfully upwards as they are very mechanical in their workings, and a reposition could mean an adjustment of lots of wire rods - and I understand replacement parts are hard to come by, so you may regret fiddling with these!
Your call, but not sure if you will achieve a usable result :*
