Hi, im about to purchase a 98 t4 2.5 petrol caravelle which seems to run fine except it has a whining when in gear. From other threads im guessing prob some bearing issue. As a back up I also own a 97 t4 2.5 petrol and was wandering if the gearboxes were compatible if the caravelle is f**kd and it needs a new box. Any reccomendations would be welcome..

You'll have to check numbers...97/98 was a difficult time....(Especially for diesels....don't know about petrols....)
98 reg, may be a 97 build....or the '97 may have been an early release.....months/weeks can make a difference.

I have a 2000 registered van....but according to the VIN, it wasn't built until Jan 2001.
Maybe it was "ordered" in 2000?!?!?!?
VIN search should show you what gearbox number was fitted....

To be honest, I wouldn't touch a petrol with "someone else's barge-pole"......I don't have enough money to fuel one!

Ok so the caravelle is a 12/97 build but compliance is 03/98.
And the transporter is 10/96 build compliance 1/97 .
Anyone know if the gearboxes would be compatible? Both 2.5 petrol

one main diference in those ages of gearbox is the rear / lower mount position, earlier ~'96 had a gearbox mount off the rear of the diff case whereas ~'96onwards had the 'pendulum' mount (from below / centre of the gearbox that connects to the crossmember below the rack)

allegedly, these will swap between vans:*

examples of the mounts..

the 'earlier' or pre '96 type that bolts to the rear of the diff case.

the 'later' or post '96 type, commonly called the 'pendulum' mount as it bolts to the lower / middle of the gearcase then connects to the crossmember (same position as earlier).

to confuse matters, the very early t4's had a diferent rear mount

BUT this shouldn't be on a van of the age you refer to (also, takes a diferent suspension crossmember and possibly gearcase to fit:* )

mounts aside, theres about a hundred diferent gearbox ratio codes, the code is stamped on a machined surface between the bellhousing, startermotor & gearchange turret (on '02B' gearboxes), theres a code comparison list https://www.vwt4forum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=90788

sorta something like that anywayI:
