T4 Multivan as camper, what would you do?

So I’ve got a 2002 Multivan which I’m in the process of sound deadening and insulating, so I’ve got the interior stripped back to the bare bones. The intention is to use it as a camper but also with some useful space, so I’ve done away with the 2 buddy seats and that’s where I’ll have a coolbox, some storage space etc. But had planned to keep the rest.

From what I’ve learned about camper builds, it’s really important to get a good seal with the insulation layers to prevent rust issues later, but if I keep the Multivan interior it’s going to be almost impossible to achieve this as I rebuild it, there are just too many places where bits bolt, screw or clip to the roof, pillars etc. This seems a lot more achievable if I was go more down the traditional camper route and batten the frames and use cladding. I don’t know which way to go! Any helpful advice?

We have had our multivan for a year now. No expert but we are more worried about rusting on the outside rather than the inside. We,ve left ours mostly stock and love the versatility over a dedicated camper conversion. The multivan bed is big when set up so not a lot of room left inside. A roll out side canopy provides extra space for living and cooking when in camper mode and provides more headroom. Fairly comfortable for a week away for 2 plus dog.

Ditto to what haphazard says.

We got our '02 LHD Multivan 18months ago from the UK and like you were very undecided about what route to take with a conversion.
Because it is worth twice what we paid for it over here in France we are leaving it all original in case we want to sell.
Luckily ours has a lifting roof, Fiamma windout awning and a large Kyam tent so well placed for a week on a campsite.
I've made a cooking pod, bolted down in the rail where the middle seat was and that still lets us pull the bed out.
I also added two swivels up front so makes for a nice usable area.
Using the 2" foam from the lifting roof and a foam mattress topper it is very comfortable :sleep:.
Downside, not a lot of storage once you put table and two chairs underneath.
Good luck deciding.

Do we need a team multivan lol. We also have a passenger swivel (great addition), and a table inside . When in bed mode we put the table outside under the canopy and it becomes the kitchen. Also a pair of fishing/camping chairs tuck behind drivers seat.
First time we went away we took so much stuff we looked like we were at a boot fair. Trimmed it down alot now
Just added a roof box which will mainly house fishing gear for next months adventure. I,m camping solo this time so plan to remove the van bed and use a fishing bedchair... should have loads of space...

Thanks for the replies. Mine is a bit unusual in that it’s a RHD, LWB, Syncro Multivan. Not an original of course, it was rebuilt with the drivetrain and interior from donor vehicles. The front 2 seats are swivels so with the buddy seats removed there’s a decent bit of space remaining even with the bed pulled out. I’d never have needed 7 seats so it made sense to lose those to gain the space.

Unfortunately for me when the Multivan trim was put in, they didn’t insulate or sound deaden first as I believe a factory Multivan would’ve been, so I’m now working on that myself. I guess I’ll just do the best job I can with sealing what I put in and hope for the best. Was good to have everything apart to have a good look around for rust, you never know what’s lying under carpet etc

Mines a lwb syncro multivan too. Its a small world :) its pretty much stock. Did notice some anti vibe sheets inside the door trims. But have,t looked anywhere else.
Mines fairly quiet on the road. Just a little tyre noise really. But I have sorted lots of rattles ad squeaks....
