So, I finally got round to finishing off my install today.

I've gotten the 12v feed coming from the back of the light switch (I bought a Laser branded pin removal tool from Amazon, don't bother it's almost useless) and I managed to get the coding in place. I now have illuminated switches, the radio buttons work (volume, forward/back) and the right hand buttons control the trip computer / mpg stuff.

If I don't program the Central Electrics module for push to talk, then the mic button on the left hand side mutes the stereo but the right hand 'back' button doesn't seem to do anything. If I code for push to talk, then both these buttons do nothing. Is that what others notice?

I'm also getting a weird error in VCDS where occasionally I get booted from the Long Coder Helper... I've run checks and I'm not getting any errors from the modules but it's stopping me from looking through the remaining coding - anyone else had this?

Yes, but note that you should not assume that it will be violet/white - it was not on my van.
Yeah mine was violet/white, so I stripped it back and soldered to it. Then took my switched 12v from the cruise live, van has factory cruise & 5A fuse in SC9.

Just waiting on my wheel & loom to arrive so I can fit them and longcode the MFSW as installed. :ILU:

I've already installed the 3 repair wires to go from lowline to midline back in the summer, so if need be I can ditch my trip stalks and just use the wheel.

Just for future info...

My problem was the wheel had previously been tampered with and three of the six pins in the black MFSW block were loose. Refitted them and all was great, shame I bought another MFSW to try and fault find - this wil be up for sale cheap if anyone is interested?

Hi Buggy,
Just done the MFSW mod on my T5 2013 Bluemotion with cruise.
Everything bar the buttons on the right for trip computer is working after coding with VCDS. I am going to check the black plug as you have had trouble with yours. Hopefully that sorts it.
Bought my "used" wheel of eBay complete with airbag and loom as my airbag was blown. ÂŁ190 delivered which isn't bad considering the airbag alone is about ÂŁ130.
Also have SPH DA-120 to fit with reverse camera. Long way to go!!

Here's a quick update to this thread, as one of the links has changed.

I've just done mine, and most of the above was spot on. For my 2013 van, a Mk6 Golf style MFSW wheel worked well - part number 3C8 419 091 C - which you can get with just the MFSW controls or with the DSG paddles as well if you want. With that wheel the original airbag fitted no problem.

The loom from airbag to steering column needed replacing, and 3C8 971 584 F was the part needed, but check carefully as there are at least a half a dozen variants of this part - with a different letter at the end - and you (obviously) need the one with exactly the right connector types.

The guide that I followed was this one (which is the one listed earlier, but they have changed the domain name):

Yeah, I know, it's for a Polo, but the only real differences I found were wire colours - the pin locations all worked fine for me.

The main wiring difference on mine was that the wire on the BCM (white plug T73b, pin17) was blue/green and not violet/white.

As an alternative to taking a power supply wire for the steering wheel slip ring (T41, pin9) from the lighting switch, I used the existing supply for the Cruise Control on the same connector (T41, pin28) which on mine was a blue/black wire. The advantage of this is that it's an ignition switched supply which already has an appropriate fuse (Fuse SC9, 5A) and it requires no fancy cable routing - it simply loops round behind connector T41 on the back of the slip ring. The disadvantage over a permanent supply is that the controls stop working when you turn the ignition off - for me that is not an issue! However, if your van did not have CC from the factory there will probably be no such wire and no fuse at SC9.

Coding changes were minimal (I think I made 2 coding changes as referred to in the Polo article, plus the change for "push to talk" which does nothing for me, as I don't have factory bluetooth). I bought the wheel with DSG gear change paddles and these worked with no coding changes at all. The right "up" and "down" MFSW buttons call up the basic DIS display but that is minimal - it just gives basic MPG, range and trip data. I don't think it's possible to get anything more than this without a Highline instrument cluster upgrade.

If you're costing this up for a DIY job, don't forget the outrageous cost of the tiny airbag loom - mine cost me a shade under ÂŁ50, UK retail. The wheel itself was ÂŁ160 including shipping from Germany, so total budget including the 2 repair wires was roughly ÂŁ220.

It took me a whole, long day - but I work slowly so that I (usually) don't break things. There's nothing fundamentally difficult but there are quite a lot of trim bits to remove/replace - it's not a job I would want to have to hurry...
This guide helped me on my Bluemotion T5 2013 with cruise already fitted.
Wire colours are the same on this post.
Bought my MFSW secondhand of eBay.
Everything worked bar the buttons on the right of the wheel for trip computer.
As "Buggy's" post, will check the black connector for faulty connection.
Horn didn't work till I enabled MFSW in VCDS so anyone with this problem should needs to code first.

Hi hius I know this is an old thread but I need some help. I've just done everything to wire up my mfsw but when I get to the Lin bus wore I have no wire in slot 17 on my connector block! My bcm does have a pin at number 17 tho! Isit just a case of buying a connector to sit into my block and use that? Please don't tell me I need to buy a bcm? My van is now on the drive in a million pieces! Lol. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

No my profile is old my new van is a 2010 facelift gp van. It doesn't have electric Windows. It doesn't have a wire In pin 17 but it does have a pin at number 17 on the bcm. Can I just got a repair wore into the block at pin 17? And hopefully it will work?

Have you checked the BCM part number to confirm that it supports MFSW? If your van has nothing fitted from the factory that needs LINbus then I doubt the capability would be included. The fact that the pin is there probably doesn't mean that much, as they need a minimum number of pins on the connector to make sure that they mate up properly.

VAG-COM no longer exists, in that it has been called VCDS for years now.

If you put VCDS into your favourite search website you will find the people that make it - Ross-Tech, and a list of their distributors in the UK.

Hi, I am looking to get a mfsw the round airbag version I.e mk7 golf. I have seen some advertised by a seller he has one advertised as polo and scirocco only and one advertised as golf and passat only. Will the difference be the connector for the airbag loom? Will one be better to order than the other to fit to a t5.1 startline? I already have cc and the correct bcm and I understand I will have to add the missing wires for the r/h buttons as well as mfsw compatible loom. Cheers

Has anyone got the flat bottom wheel with the separate control module working- Early on in the thread someone says it won't work, is this the case and if so why?

Reason for asking is later on the thread someone else is quoting 5k0 971 584 c as the loom, which appears to be the one used with the separate module in the steering wheel.

What does that module actually do that different to not having it?

I've fitted a flat bottom steering wheel with separate module.
Yes mate my left hand buttons work but I'm yet to run the extra wires for right hand buttons.
