Not sure about the fronts. I have done the rears and did it with the wheel off, but would be possible with the wheel on. Much easier if you have access to a lift like a garage.

I had an intermittent issue with mine, did the wiring etc. and in the end had the rear bearing replaced to solve it. The reluctor ring the sensor picks up on is in the bearing assembly. Had no issues since.

Think of a code reader as an investment. I have VCDS and it has saved the cost itself in being able to diagnose issues.
