didnt realise my 2008 shuttle had a extra pre heater to warm the coolant quicker
rand a vcds auto scan and it said the heater was locked, i tried to unlock it cleared the fault codes to find it had locked again
any ideas why it keeps locking after aving cleared the codes
general info says the diesel tank should be over 1/4 full or heater will go int to lock mode when yo start the van

an other ideas why it keeps locking

Is it a Webasto Thermotop? As far as I know there are quite a few possible reasons for it to lock if it thinks a fault is detected or coditions are not met. If it is an original heater the specific fault codes logged are the best start. Have a good look (with VCDS) at exactly which type of heater it has. A complete scan should automatically find the controller for the heater (under auxillary heat or a simillar name) and give you the info. Try googling the fault code. There is simple procedure to unlock the heater in 'Basic Settings' once the fault is fixed but the procedure varies depending on heater type and vehicle and it will not stay unlocked for long if the fault is not corrected. Most of those heaters will not start at an ambient temperature above 10 degrees so maybe your problem is just the nice weather!

If you are struggling, post the complete VCDS scan here and we will try and help. :)

I did not know it even had one until i ran the vcds auto scan it says part no 7H0 815 O71 F Standheizung i think its a webasto but not sure
It had a few other codes ie low fuel and temp sensor but they have cleared, the heater lock code 02251 when i clear it comes straight back on
Surley if its warm weather it shouldnt lick the heater as every time it does this I believe it has to be unlocked by the vcds.
Should my shuttle have two batteries if it has a heater as i can only find one

No, it won't have a second battery because it has a Thermotop, have you tried this:-

Yes tried that but code just keeps coming straight back something is causing it to lock although the temp sensor and low fuel codes have been deleted and not returned
I tried to do the output tests but nothing keeps saying NA
Is there anyway of checking pump with the vcds
I noticed when ign on rear right wheel wheel hear a like a motor sound every 20 secs

Rear right wheel arch could be a servo on the rear heater which is nothing to do with the Thermotop heater although that shouldn't run every 20 seconds.

When you say 'tried that' did VCDS confirm/accept the adaption? If so then if you go to address 18 Aux Heat - Adaption - CH 003 should now read '1'. Can you confirm that?

Not sure if you have genuine VCDS but if not and a fault code has been logged in another controller you can't see then that could be enough to lock the heater. Copy and paste the full scan text here if you can and maybe something will stand out. :)

The supply voltages could be causing the trouble. It may be that the heater has been designed to lock if it sees voltages outside the normal range. You can see on the scan that the air bag controller is also complaining about the voltage.

I would try copying the codes (or this thread) for your records and anyone else working on the van and see what comes back. If none of the voltage codes come back, don't start the van but unlock the heater. If the heater accepts the adaption and also stays unlocked run the engine and check again. If running the engine causes the locking suspect the alternator. Have a check across the battery terminals with the engine running. Make sure the main engine earth and the battery are ok too.

I don't know enough about Webasto heaters to help much more but it does sound like there is a permanent fault on the heater or the wiring to it. However this thread on the VCDS forum does seem to suggest that if the outside temp is too warm the heater will be locked (so it can't fire up) and maybe it unlocks itself when all conditions are met. So perhaps you don't actually have a problem after all! As far as I know 'Output Tests' should be available. Some faults can stop this working or maybe your heater is too early to support this function. You do need to cycle ign off/on each time you use it.

You might be able to run the pump directly in basic settings as the OP says he has done in the thread.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. (y)
