We're about to set off for 3 months around Europe in our T4 camper. We're planning on staying out in the country mostly as we're big into hiking but will probably be visiting cities at least once a week or so, using out of town campsites.

The wife reckons that bikes would be useful so we can leave the van on site and cycle around, especially when visiting cities. What are your thoughts and experiences on using bikes over there and are they worth the hassle fitting on the van etc? Would they make us more of a target for theft?

The main countries we intend to visit are Netherlands, (south) Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia and Italy.

Any other tips would be appreciated too as it's the first time in the van abroad.

Cheers!

Take them. Much easier than parking the van in town.

Staring in Holland bikes are the preferred means of transport. Likewise German and most European cities.

Make sure you have good locks.

We bought a couple of folding bikes for the exact same purpose. We used them extensively last year in France and Switzerland for the 2 or 3 km from sites to towns. The bikes we got were a couple of 16 inch wheel cheapies called Monaco from www.bicycles4u.co.uk As I said they were cheap and not the best quality but for what we've needed them for they've been perfect. They fold small enough for the two of them to be stored on the back part of the seat bed when it's in its folded position.
