I have a 12v to 12v 50a 4 stage charger which is battery to battery to charge my 180Ah sealed battery when the engine is running and when on hook up I have an upspex 20Ah charger. Recently I noticed my 12v charger was always charging at almost full capacity 48Ah for about 25 minutes before gradually stepping down to a float of 14.4v and 0amps even when the 240v charger was saying the battery was full and had switched into float mode.
I did a few checks but came to the conclusion my fancy 12v was on its way out and boiling my battery. I rung Sterling the manufacturer and described the symptoms- after a few minutes he pointed out a 'float' difference of 13.8 to 14.4v between the two chargers- that's 0.6 volts my 12v charger is rushing to charge.
So panic over - both units and battery are fine it's just the difference in float voltages phew!
