Hello,

So my 1991 short nose T4 campervan got a track rod end advisory at her last MOT.

Apparently VW stopped making them for these in 2014 and my mechanic is having trouble locating the right one. Here's a picture of what she currently has on her.

Any advice or ideas about who to try in order to get hold of one?!

Many thanks
Melissa

Check how much thread is on the rod....maybe there is enough for the longer one to fit?

is the van 'poverty spec' so no PAS?

I believe thats one of the diferences on the earlier vans (pre '96) BUT shouldn't be an issue getting spares:*

Hi there,

What you have suggested is what my mechanic said we may have to end up trying if we cant find the right part - its really good to know that it sounds like a viable option otherwise I'd be sobbing - such is my campervan love ;-)

Thanks,
Melissa

It does have power assisted steering but yes, she is pre 96 and still going very strongly :) My wonderful mechanic has a lot of faith in his parts man - who is on the case but gave us that info about VW stopping making these parts in 2014!

Hopefully, something will get sorted out in the end!

In VW love, :)

I think you should get another mechanic. He sound so helpless.
He's not a VW specialist but has given me some excellent advice, done some great work and is just really nice so I'm sticking with him. ;-)

I've been in touch with VW heritage and they suggested it may be this one https://www.vwheritage.com/701419811a-steering-tie-rod-end-left-vw-spare it doesn't look quite the same to me and appears to have a bigger lip at the bottom. But as I know knob-all about track end rods - maybe my lip' has just worn away? I have no idea. Anyway, I sent the info to him and see what he reckons.

Recently fitted two of them from VW Heritage to my 1992 t4 1.9D (with power steering) -A is left and -B right without any problems but don't expect them to be identical to the ones that came off .I would replace both sides at the same time as it will need tracking.

Correction to my previous post -A is right and -B is left.

I'm just glad you didn't bring big-end into the equation. LOL:

Thanks very much for that - I think I will order some from VW heritage and keep fingers crossed. :)
