Upgraded headlights on T5: which bulbs to use please?

I have a 2005 van that has a set of upgraded lights on it amongst other mods: just bought her yesterday but bizarrely the offside main beam unit has a “blue” looking HID bulb in it but the left has a halogen.

So I have a couple of questions: can I install brighter bulbs in the whole unit, dipped and main, as the halogen bulbs are fairly uninspiring, and - if so - which bulbs do people recommend?

Thanks - forum and van novice here so apologies in advance for any mistakes!

As he says, it's probably just a tinted bulb on one side. It would be pretty unusual for someone to fit a HID kit on one side but not the other. And thankfully cheap Chinese HID kits are getting much less common now that they have started to enforce the rules on them a bit better.

As they are aftermarket lamps it's not possible to say what bulb type you're going to need without taking them out to look, but if they are H1 or H4 then you'll have plenty of choice for upgraded halogens - Osram and Philips both make a range of brighter bulbs (some tinted, some not) and they are (IMO) worth having. The only downside is that the brighter they are, the shorter the working life, typically. That may be why one of yours has already been replaced, despite what looks like a fairly recent facelift.

What B&T said, above.

They look like the THQ T5.1 v3 DRL sequential indicator things that I fitted to mine not long ago. If so, the standard dip beam is an H7 fitment, and the main beam is H1 fitment. (Vdub Transporters also do a similar unit, with the same bulb fitments).

Uprated bulbs like Osram Nightbreakers are available, as are various LED replacements, but any LED replacement can be deemed an MoT failure nowadays, because your lights have to have auto-levelling and washers if they’re fitted with LED/HID bulbs.
