this is probs more of a rant so grab a cuppa or something before you start reading :D

ok so a few months back i put a post in the is it worth it section.
my father in law offered me a 1998 day/surf van, 1.9td 800 special. cambelt, water pump just changed and full service carried out. it had been sorned whilst the interior was tinkered with. it also had 218000 miles which was my concern. any way the price was £2300.00.the forum seemed to think this was a reasonable price so i took the plunge :ILU:

i sold my beloved car in ocotber for less than value in order to get the funds sooner and in order to buy a run around, gave all the money to father in law bout mid november for the van with the promise it will fly through the mot and i could get it before the cold weather starts. in my mind this meant early december. i wanted it before the cold weather as i couldnt bear the thought of it stood in a garden covered in snow all winter, and dreaded the damage it could cause.

20th december comes still no van but it passed the mot with 1 advisory. by the way at this point i have never even driven a van, let alone the one i bought. anyway i started whinging how i wanted it, it was a mild xmas and i could of gone somewhere etc. taxed it for jan 1st and then completed the log book.

well................. tuesday i finally test drove it and............ its like a wet sponge, doesnt go at all, i feel its dangerous changing gear as i lose so much power and the revs completely drop. also the accelerator pedal seems stiff. the gear box feels like jelly and i kept selecting 3rd instead of 1st. ive read the 1.9 are slow and sluggish so thought thats just how it was.

wednesday (last night) took the other half out in the van to test drive also the van seemed fine just as the day before anyway.

driving down a dual carriage way at 55mph, and suddenly felt a small loss of power the engine still going but couldnt accelerate, slowly went to 50mph, then 45mph, tried to change top 4th gear in order to get some revs and the van just died, completely cut. rolled to a slip road then stopped.

i tried restarting and the battery seemed dead, nothing. called the RAC who werent interested in fixing it but just loaded it and took it back to my house 5 miles away.

the other halfs father turns up and is adament nothing was wrong with the van. got the RAC man to jump start the van, it started but sounded wrong, then a sqeaky crunchy noise came as if at each rotation of the engine??!!! well thats how it seemed, it got louder and louder then konked out. well mr father in law just kept starting the van till eventually it refused to start again

i asked him not to start it incase it was a belt that snapped or something was now much worse than before. but im a simple female who has no clue so captain caveman jus kept turning the key and sending my van into an even deeper coma.

other half had a call today and father in laws mechanical friend recommends to get a new engine.

im refusing to pay anything towards it, well i cant im skint now, but i feel hopeless. my poor van i waited months to get hold of and for what 40 miles to nearly £20 of diesel and an engine that went bang with a little help of course.

im gutted. caveman reckons he will do engine change with his mate and we will have it back in 2 weeks.

how slow are these engines in a 1.9td?
and how unlucky am i??!!
me and my van have gotten off to a rocky start which is only making me think negatively bout owning it once fixed.

i had booked to go to northumberland in march to camp and then cornwall in may. will it be in the van that is the question,

i do have a pick of my poor van on the loading trailer but would rather save its dignity lol was hoping my first newbie post would be of pics of my van inside and out at a lovely location not on the back of a lorry (

sorry for the rant. my other half doesnt understand the pain im in :(

oh and ironically just before the engine stopped on the dual carriage way i was just talking to the other half bout getting the bhp improved by a local vw specialist, getting the injectors replace etc for the sum of £400.00 haha no chance now

your van shouldnt be that slow. 1.9td is a slow van and was a shock for me when i sold my car but it wasnt painfully slow.
dont let the bad times put you off of your van though
everyone has had problems, some bigger than others
my vans gearbox went 18 days after owning it just after i blew 500 pound on a new set of wheels!
forget about it and enjoy it! :)

That's really sad, I hope you manage to get sorted..

You have been badly treated by your account..

I sure folks here will say get your van converted to the 1.9tdi unit, get your father-in-bore to source one and get that fitted for you, it's the least he can do...T:

Really sorry to hear about the grief you've had - hope you get it sorted soon. An engine swap can be done in time for your planned trips, from what I can gather, and others here with (i think) the same engine have gone down the tdi swap out route, so might be worth a look? More power & good economy!

Keep thinking of the planned trips, they will happen, it'll feel a lot better when you're sat on the step of your van, with the sun on your face and the beach in front of you - January always sucks, no money, weather etc but keep going - it'll be worth it T:

Tell the father in law to sort it or you will remove his sons balls with a rusty spoon
On a good note if it would have been a private sale then you would have no come back but as its family in sure he won't let you down T:

It is gutting and even worse when its a brand new van and youe had hardly any time to drive it.

Have a quick search on the forum and you will find people that also live near you and even a date for a meet near you. There you will find people that have a mass of knowledge more than willing to help you.

Your engine might just have something like a loose injector causing the issue. Im no mechanic that was just my way of saying something very simple might be stopping your engine from running.

The amount of stories you read on here of breakdown companys telling members their engine is ruined when its a simple fix is amazing.

You have the support of all the members, We know how you feel

Sorry to hear about your problems:(, have a good moan mate you’ll feel better and as you can see will back you up!!

I myself drive a 1.9TD and having gone through the GTI crisis there is a bit of a difference. Then again mine trundles along fine and getting reasonable miles to the gallon on the country lanes of North Wales.

Done the odd modification which the forum will helpT:T:

Don’t give up, its good fun:ILU:

Meet in Birmingham??? Where? When?? I haven't seen any mention of that. [I'm in Brum myself]

I can't imagine how bad you must be feeling and how disappointed that your dreamed of van is not living up to expectations. At least your FIL cannot escape his responsibilities and you will at least have plenty of opportunity to make his life miserable by reminding him and his friends about his failings if he doesn't sort it for you.

I can't wait to see pics of your van - doesn't matter if its not got an engine - post some pictures anyway for us to take a look at.

I hope your OH is supporting you in nagging his dad to pull his finger out and get things sorted quickly.

Sorry about the problems you have had, don't loose heart as hopefully you'll be able to look back at this and laugh.

Don't know much about the 1.9 but I know you can run them on Veggie Oil which is not only cheap it will score points with the Tree Huggers.

Vanquish runs meets in Telford, every other Wednesdays I think, he has a Thread in the English Region section.

15th Jan - Campermart - Telford, pop along and say hi.

Good Luck T:

Ah, the joys of new van ownership!

If it's any consolation, we bought our first t4 in October and believed we had fulfilled 'the dream'... queue shoddy workmanship from a 'specialist' garage in Wakefield fitting a new side window, alarm developing dementia, random electrical faults, a buggered fuel pump (best part of 900 bricks that one), a foo-barred battery and now slow battery drain from somewhere and all this before Christmas.

A few weeks ago I was seriously up for selling it, as it felt cursed and thought we'd been unbelieveably stupid. But everytime I get in and drive I fall in love all over again with it and the possibilities it offers LOL: Bloke reckons you've got to learn to love it - it ain't going to perform like the car we've been used to driving.

Me and the bloke are going to hang on in with it until the weather improves and we can let the good times roll (hopefully)! Really hope your new charge is sorted out soon and the FIL keeps his tail hanging between his legs for a suitably long time :) !

I think father in law should give you his ticket, the monkey.

The best things come to those who wait, even experienced people can make mistake though, dont let it put you off, and we are in the boat my mrs doesnot get it either, and says I am sad when I wave at modded and some non modded t4s.

keep ya chin up.
