After replacing turbo and intercooler just before Xmas and covering just 500 miles I've broke down.
RAC says misfire causing thumping noise and worn inlet valve bucket follower
Garage RAC sent it to have said engine replacement and they don't do engines.
looking for a recommended VW specialist in the Leicester area who can take this on

Extremely unlikely it needs a new engine! Normally a new camshaft and followers sorts this.

Yes it is more than likely the camshaft that has worn. Can be heard as a thumping noise through the inlet.

Hope you are sat down, just the camshaft and followers will be about £1400-£1600 at a good indy. You may have other stuff found wrong or you may choose to do the things that cost no more than parts due to the van engine being in pieces anyway, for example the injector seals and as a catch all while there, the glow plugs. mine was done with all the above the begining of December and as I had to have a new intercooler as well as it fell apart on removal the total was £1980. One place quoted £2300 just for the camshaft and followers. Some have done the work themselves but this saves only about £500 as the costs are the parts, you also need the correct timing tools and a big glass of experience or bravery just about every bolt you remove has to be replaced due to being a stretch bolt or one use only. There are some places that do the basic work for about £1000-£1200 however they wont be doing it with all the parts needing to be replaced (stretch bolts and one use only bolts) which is where the saving is.
