Hi there.. I am currently in the market for either a T4 or T5 but was looking for some advice on what the best starter van would be.

I am going to carry out a camper conversion but i want something with a bit of go as well

I've been looking at a T5 130ps - is this a good van ?

Thanks in advance

All have their merits, although I cant speak from the point of view of a T5.

I've just bought our T5 130 after months looking. Very happy with the engine - smooth, powerful enough and hopefully reliable!!

We are going for the camper conversion and I liked the idea of a bit more poke than the 1.9 for our local hills, dogs, bikes etc.

Recommended :)

Thanks for all your replies

Has anybody used or know anything about the DSG auto gearbox in the T5 ?
I've seen a nice T5 not far from me with pretty much everything i wanted, but it has the auto gearbox.... have heard a few bad things about them, the expensive servicing and cost for a new clutch

Thanks

Read on here from Daziboy, who I think works at a VW dealership, that the auto is as reliable if not more so than the manual, despite some scare stories to the contrary. C02 is a bit grim though!

Hello all, i am also in the market for a late T4 or older T5 Camper. We tried a tiny caravan, didn't like the slow motorway speeds, considered teardrop trailers, but they're not practical enough.

I'm not brave enough to convert a van myself, so would like one done already, unless someone can recommend a conversion specialist who can source the donor van too?

We'd like the kitchen/cupboards right down one side, RHD, lower power diesel (to keep tax down), elevating roof (this could come later perhaps), and enough seatbelts for 5, so i guess the original three upfront arrangement is needed? We'd ideally like captains seats so that four+ can socialise easy, but if the bench seat upfront folds down onto itself, then that would work.

I have a mk5 Golf GTI which I'll be selling to make way for the van, hance the running costs have to be similar or better, as it'd become "car" number two in our household.

I'd like it to look the part with perhaps some colour coded bumpers, and good sized rims without being too wide-boy. (i'm too old for 20" rims!).

Would welcome any advice, or pointers as to whom to speak to.

Thanks, Tony
