Hey folks,

Next weekend I'm taking the van and other half for a few days away, will be around Oxford area, does anyone recommend places to stay (wildcamp/cheap sites) and recommend anything to do/see while up there, we will have bikes with us.

What do you recommend? Don't mind traveling a bit.

Standlake has a couple of camping sites, or there is the Camping and Caravan site at Oxford, back of go outdoors by the Park and Ride.

Places to see, well Oxford has a full package if you are on push bikes. The Colleges are worth a look as are the Museums, and is a prime spot for a coffee and people watching...:D

Out side...I would say take a visit to Witney...no parking charges so is a very busy shopping centre, home of the Witney Blanket. The Cogges Farm Museum there is small, but worth a visit. You can take drive through Bampton, my home village, not much here but find the church and the little green. It where they film the village scenes for Dowton Abbey. You can then drive out to Clanfield and the Radcott Bridges (Swan Pub does food) on the River Thames. An area referred to in "Four Pillers of the Earth" as a sit of ancient battles.

Or cross towards Lechlade for the river etc. Just north of this on the A361 I think it is, there is a village called Filkens. They have a free wool museum and shop with looms etc. North from there on A361 again you have the Cotswold wild life park, and north again you hit Burford.

To be honest these are just thought that are West of Oxford. You have the whole of the Cotswolds to explore too. You can go to Bourton on the Water. Park on the outskirts and cycle in. Lots to see and do but very touristy.

If you are big on cycle rides. You could park in Clanfield, cycle through the lanes to Filkens and the wool museum, down to Lechlade for the river, along back lanes to Radcot Bridges...drink in the garden at the Swan Pub and cycle back to Clanfield for the Van. Around trip of 12 miles ish I would guess.

Uffington White Horse Hill is worth a visit...walk up the hill to the Whitehorse and earth workings. Or go to Blenheim Palace. Worth a full visit at least once in your life. T:

As to wild camping...the Swan Pub at Radcot has a car park on the island between the bridges. They sometimes have camping in the field beyond. Might be worth calling them to ask if they would let you camp there. (No loo just the pub but a nice spot!)

Have fun...A:
