Can anyone tell me if the pipe tht goes from the airbox to the turbo should have some sort of clip on the turbo end?

Mine doesnt and the pipe seems a loose fit on the turbo.

There is no clip as it's a hard plastic tube, some have put jubilee clips around the pipe but I can't see that doing very much as the pipe isn't flexible.
On mine I removed the O-ring from the turbo pipe, put a few wraps of plumbers PTFE tape in the groove for the O-ring (to push it out more) then refitted and tested for tightness.
I've since got a generic pack of O-rings so if I'm ever back in there again I'll change it for a fresh O-ring.

If you could fab up a rubber sleeve for the pipe to go over it that would be the best solution I think. Even using a short section of an old inner tube might be all that's needed. That point is under slight vacuum when running so it should pull itself tight when in use.

The plastic air inlet pipe seems to be affected by heat or by oil mist drawn through the breather system - the effect is that it 'grows' and fails to be a tight fit on the turbo inlet spigot. As others have said this leads to unfiltered and unmetered air being drawn in, with a corresponding reduction in air pasing thorough the MAF sensor. On my van (2.5 TDi AJT) replacing the pipe and O ring with a new one (about ÂŁ18 from dealer) made a noticeable difference to the running of the van - more power, smoother, more responsive etc.

About a year later I had reason to take the pipe off again, and found that the new pipe had also started to expand. I refitted it with a new O ring and a big jubilee clip - no problems since.

Clearly this is a design fault which should have been rectified by VW, but as it's not that obvious to diagnose maybe they just decided to keep quiet about it.
