anyone have the same flywheel as me? early 2.4 aab. my camshaft slot lines up with the mark in the inspection window to the right in the first picture but after an extensive look round the flywheel i found the o I I in the second picture (iPhone camera on full zoom). this would put my timing out slightly if i should be lined up between the o and I. there are 2 pointers on my flywheel like in the first picture (are these something to do with the clutch?) and all the marks are within an eighth of a flywheel turn.
i am slightly concerned as my van has been to the garage twice this month after i broke down with a suspected pump belt slip. the garage got my van to run but it makes a pinging sound every other engine rotation. they said they could not get it running any better no matter how much they move the pump timing. the garage also said my cam belt is very worn. i am happy to change the cam belt myself but not knowing whether the cam belt or the pump timing is the problem makes it all very frustrating as the van pretty much runs fine except for the slight knocking. it seems odd though that the knocking only occurs every few engine rotations rather than being a constant noise. if someone could give me a clear answer regarding the flywheel i will at least have somewhere to start as I'm now at my wits end and just want her back to full health. I've never heard a engine running out of time before but I'm assuming as mine still runs and drives ok ish its not wrecked. all the best and thanks in advance for any advice

Hi,

I know this is an old thread, but I'm having trouble getting a definitive answer on which mark is TDC on my flywheel.

It's the same flywheel as the one in this post. I timed it up to 'I' but its running very poorly. (I've rebuilt the engine after a cracked cylinder head).

I have noticed another timing indicator. It's a notch on the crank pulley which lines up with a line on the plastic timing belt cover.

When I turn the crank very slightly clockwise, to line this indicator up, my flywheel points to the 'T' mark.

Could 'T' be top dead centre on these flywheels?

took some better pictures when i got home today. i also found a z or possibly a 2 to the left of the 0. the pic is upside down and the tippex is my pump mark so ignore that. i don't know if the z or 2 holds any significance? i assume from the last reply that the flywheel tooth to the right of the pointer in the second picture is tdc? if so my cam belt has slipped a tooth, which explains my engine pinging sound. i guess I'm lucky it didn't slip further. thanks for the replies so far guys. any further conformation would be awesome, thanks

The camshaft slot will only line up the one way, so if it's in line your at TDC (assuming current belt isn't a tooth out). Check the pump mark too, it should be near enough at the marker as well, I say near enough as it may be adjusted slightly to get timing right. On my 2.5tdi I found it very difficult to see the timimng mark on the flywheel while it was in the van, looking straight down at it was not showing the mark. I used a mobile phone set on the video camera mode, put it in at an angle on top of the box and fom 45 degrees or less, the mark was much more visible, esp with the flash set to on. I used the phone as my head wouldn't fit in there.

I have the rocker cover and the cam sprocket at the pump end off and the camshaft and lobes line up with the timing line on the head. With the camshaft lined up my flywheel shows the pointer in the first picture as the timing mark but as I have 2 of these on my flywheel I need to be sure of the tdc mark. I'm not looking to use where the flywheel is currently as a reference because I'm assuming my timing has slipped and I need to start from scratch
