AXB Engine replacement dilemma

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a bit of advice. My T5 2006, 1.9 TDI AXB Engine is slowly giving up on me and breaking my heart :/ . I gambled on it when I bought it, it had 235,000 miles and has 280,000 miles now. I have spent a lot of time converting it to a camper and have spent a lot of money on it mechanically although the biggest job was the timing belt and water pump, I had all the bushings, links etc replaced last year and replaced the injectors all be it with used ones which might have had just as much miles as the original ones. I cleaned the EGR and intake manifold myself and the rocker cover gasket was replaced recently as well. Anyway I have a bit of a dilemma now. I have had it in with mechanics on numerous occasions over the last 2 years with misfiring issues which were traced to injectors and or wiring loom. I made a decision last year that I couldnt keep throwing money at so that if I was going to put more money into it I would do it properly and get a reconditioned engine, injectors and turbo and whatever else in the hope that it would be like a new van and would only need the usual maintenance costs thereafter or at least for say 5 years. Anyway I have just sent the injectors away to get tested, repaired and/or replaced. Now i have an option of buying a remanufactured unit for about 1200 quid or option 2 is to get a used engine with injectors which came out of a 2007 van with 112,000 miles for about 700 quid. What would you do? Any help or advice appreciated. Thanks, Conall

My AXD has needed constant care. It's 2005 with 160,000 - The injectors failed to the point the van wouldnt start at 155,000. I replaced them with new. I've done the following work in the last year

Steering Rack
5 injectors
New manifold (original cracked)
Start motor (went in smoke)
Vacuum Leaks (pipes and solenoids replaced)

It's now starting to tick loudly when cold, and smoking so suspect turbo is gonna need doing and the clutch is on it's way out.

I think I'll get a good recon when it finally gives up. I don't think i'd find one much under ÂŁ2 to 3000 with a warranty so if you can get some promises for ÂŁ1200 I'd jump on it.

A second hand engine is only gonna go through the same failures?

The problem with the 5 pot is vw don't make them no more and are only now available from a third party.....this then becomes a mine field as to it's built correctly. The 1.9 4 pot on the other hand is fitted across the vag range and is a cheaper engine to replace or repair.

That's the big dilemma. You buy a "remanufactured/reconditioned" engine and what are you getting also?
Isnt it bound to be an engine that gave up previously or was sitting in a scrapyard? Then they just replace the parts that are worn and send it on. Whereas - buying a second hand engine with say 100,000 miles at least you would have a better idea of the life of the engine. TBH I think i'd be drawn to the second hand engine, ideally if I could get one with 60,000 - 100,000 miles. If its well looked after theres no reason that engine couldnt go for 2-300,000 no?! I guess whatever way you look at it its a gamble either way. Sourced another engine with 60,000 miles in Lithuania for about €1,200 delivered to Ireland. Not making any drastic decisions yet though. Waiting to get it seen again by someone who knows the T5 and get an honest opinion.. something that is very hard to find. BAZ B uk =, im very surprised you had so much trouble with the van at such low mileage. A mate had the same one and he has over 300,000 miles on it. It has started to give hime trouble lately but.. Anyway i'l keep you posted

Well - I have a picture of the former owner using it for off roading as it had land rover wheels and about 2 inch of hardened mud covering the engine bay and sub frame. May not have been best looked after, but then I believe the AXD has more than it's fair share of issues. Love not having a cam chain / belt :)

So a little update since yesterday. The main problem lately was a misfire which got progressively worse over the past few weeks. I had similar problems before. The last time was about 3 months ago, the fault code that was thrown up was injector 4, the mechanic found that there was a loose connection on the injector number 4 which he fixed (all be it temporarily). After watching a youtube video I decided to have a go myself. It was an easy enough job and took about an hour. I have a video on my phone which I'l post later. After making the connection better - I cleaned it with electrical contact cleaner spray and bent the connectors ever so slightly so that it would be a tighter connection. These connections seem to come loose from the engine vibrating. So I put everything back together and was excited about starting up the van after all my hard work :) .. First turn It didnt start and the oil light came in on for a sec. I stopped it immediately and double checked engine bay to make sure everything was ok.. Everything ok. Second time it started fine and sounded pretty smooth! Happy with my work, I left it ticking over and got ready to take her for a spin to see how it was.. Bad news. The problem came back after a short 5 minute drive. Phoned the my mechanic with the news and he said to order a new wiring loom, that the one thats in it is probably tired after having bad connections for some time. So I have ordered a new wiring loom and waiting to hear back about the injectors I sent off. Its a red weather warning here at the moment (north west of Ireland) so that's going to slow everything down for a few days and I probably wont hear back about the injectors until next week and get the loom til Monday. If it wasnt so bloody cold out I would do the job again and double check every connector again!

Another nightmare of an AXD. There should be a (mental) health warning with them.
Check my posts.
What ever you do, don't buy anything from CJH Salvage in Norn Iron....total crook.
It will take a long time, but a s/h engine with known history is the best option. Do NOT throw good money after bad on a troublesome engine.
My 06 AXD stands me €9k because I thought I could fix it.

A little update.
Last Sunday when it stopped snowing and became bearable to work on the van in the cold I had another go at cleaning the injector connections.. I get a little obsessive like that :D
This time I was a bit more thorough and cleaned each connection a little better and left it dry properly before making sure each connection was fitted back on properly. It has been running better ever since last Sunday (10 days ago) although it's still smokey and rough on start up. I got the injectors back today, they were all tested 2 were fine and 2 were reconditioned, I also got a new wiring loom so I'm pretty excited now about about putting those injectors back in. I know it does seem a bit mad to have sent off old injectors but I wanted to be able to drive the van around so I took advantage of the fact that I had them and I could still drive the van, I would have been off the road otherwise for 2 weeks! The only problem was when I got the injectors back today I noticed that the plastic housing where the electrical connection clicks on was broken off.. Not happy after paying over €500 to get them tested/repaired, angry I phoned the company up but the guy assured me that it wont affect the connection.. I Guess we'l see.. The other thing im thinking is possibly switching out on the solenoids off one of the injectors that are in the van when im switching them out.. Another great article I came across on my research is this one
