Anyone done this? Just need to see if its working.

I got this from another thread:
PIN 1 - RED -CONSTANT LIVE
PIN 2 - BROWN - EARTH
PIN 3 & 4 - GREEN - FUEL PUMP
PIN 5 - WHITE - DIAGNOSTIC
PIN 6 - BLACK 12v +ve THERMOSTAT
PIN 7 - BLUE 12v +ve ALTERNATOR ONLY SWITCH

...so which wire goes where to bypass thermo switch? Electrics not my strong point, needless to say!

cheers

thermo switch is located behind front bumper just above towing eye disconect the 2 pin plug and conect the 2 wires together.

the heater will only fire up with the engine running.

The heater needs +12v on to pin6 to tell it that the ambient temperature is below 10degC. As the previous post says, just bridge the contacts at the temperature sender behind the bumper and it should fire up when the engine is started.

I'm looking at using one of these to give me remote control of the heater:

alan do you have any other info or wiring diagrams of how you plan to install that remote unit?

im looking into doing this conversion myself just trying to find a suitable electric water pump was thinking of one from a 1.9td ?

if you have any diagrams or info id be interested to know what you have. or have in mind.

pm me if easier

cheers

andy

ps i was led to believe the ambiant temp had to be below -5 not -10 ?

Yes, you're right. It is -5. Sorry.
I've got a wiring diagram for these heaters, I'll post it later today(on nights at the moment:()
On my Caravelle there is a recirculating pump already below the radiator. I was going to connect to this rather than installing another pump.
I am looking to modify the heater to use as a preheater rather than a night heater so I'm not concerned about heating the engine rather than the matrix. I want to be able to press a button on a remote control to fire up the heater 30mins or so before I get in the 'velle. So then I have instant heat for de-icing etc.
I work shifts, so a timer is no good as the times I need to use the car vary.
I realise Erberspacher do have a remote control kit for these heaters but they are very expensive, I'm trying to replicate these kits at a lot less cost. I have fitted a D5WZ heater inplace of a faulty D3WZ heater I had on my Caravelle, identical except the D5WZ has a higher output.

just stick paper clip or simalar in to conectors to short the two wires, remember van has to be running and water temp has to be below 75 deg ithink otherwise heater thinks water hot enough

blacktop
i dont think you can use the recurc pump in its standard location because it pumps water through cooling rad and doesnt the thermostat have to open before hot water will get to that pump or am i just tired LOL:

#14 ·
Yeah, you might be right there bud. I'll have to check the cooling circuit and see what/when makes that pump run. It must be for when the engine isn't running otherwise you wouldn't need it, the engine waterpump does the same job surely:confused:.

#16 ·
blacktop im shure that the pump is there so that if you switch off the engine when its hot, the pump ciculates the water round the rad and is temp switched, so not to cause any damage to engine, not shure on the temp that it switches at,

I was led to believe that only the caravelles had these circulation pumps?.
Wouldn't have thought any damage could be caused after the engine is turned off:confused:.

Sorry mate, I don't want to sound like I'm doubting what you are saying.:) no offence intendedT:.

im shure that i read it somewhere on here that the 2.4 has a hot spot and that the pump is there to stop heat staying in the wrong place im shure someone will come along and put me right on this i know my mates 2.4 has one but his isnt a caravelle

Just spotted this thread, been looking at the heater Mod for a while and I'm glad that I have finally found a few other people who have tried it.
going for a pre heater to start with for cold mornings, the remote option looks good but I may settle for an extra switch on the dash to start.
If I want to run the heater without the engine running do I just need to get the power to the 2 pins, (the one from the sensor and the one from the alternator, or do I need to get a feed to the water pump as well.
Later on I'd like to use it as a parking heater so I'll look into the valves etc. Has any one got any more info on this.
Also thinking that knowing me I will turn it on and forget to turn it off so the van stays toasty once I'm at work but the battery is dead when I want to go home. Any suggestions for a timer to turn it off?

I didnt fit a remote control unit in the end. I just fitted a switch into the dash which bypassed the thermoswitch. I can now just flick the switch whenever i want the heater to come on with the engine to reduce warm up time.

Cash is tight at the moment so I may have to go that way too. Might look for an illuminated switch to fit in one of the blanks on the dash. Where did you run the wires through?
Might leave the remote until I can set it up on a leisure battery and then look at the engine bypass for camping and set it all up properly.

I ran the wires up from the thermoswitch(adjacent to the towing eye) into the engine bay then above the air filter box and through the bulkhead to behind the fusebox. Then behind the clocks to finally arrive at the dashboard switch blanks. Simples.
