Hi, my 1998 2.5 tdi caravelle has a auxilary heater plumbed into the heater water system. It has come on several times but I am not sure how or where it is switched on, anyone know how to switch it on as it very cold in the mornings now and my van takes ages to warm up without it !

Hi

There is a sensor fitted behind the front bumper and when the outside temp drops below a set limit the heater fires up, not sure on the temp.
You could splice into the wires and fix a switch so you could turn it on and off at will, but it dose only warm up the coolant to help get it up to operating temp quicker.

There are a couple of very good threads about this. You can bypass the sensor with a switch so you can turn it on when you want not just automatically below 5 degrees.#

There are even ways to remote start the aux heater without the engine running for those cold mornings and even to run it as a campoing heater bypassing the engine block so you get faster heat.

Got to go now but if I can find this again tomorrow I will try to add links to the threads I have found.

Got to sort out the switch bypass this year as I can't afford any more than that as I'd need to get someone to do it for me.

The temp sensor is behind the bumper on the drivers side. I have a paper clip in min, intended as a temp fix until I get a switch or control unit. But never got any further.

One word of warning it does cause a lot of smoke in an underground parking garage, 10 times more than just the van idling alone.
