So noticed a little clunk clunk coming from the drivers wheel arch when i was driving at the weekend. Thought possible ball joints or bearings?? alot and i mean ALOT of noise this morning on the way to work. Got the Lads next door to put her up on the ramps. The drivers side drive shaft has alot of play in where it goes to the wheel..... GREAT! everything else seems fine.

Just phoned the garage and they quoted my ÂŁ250 approx to fix it  guy bored me with details of variation on the problem so i said i would get back to him. Jut looked through some threads and it seems you can get a drive shaft for ÂŁ50 brand new.

Question is, would there be anything else i need to by with it? Bearing kit etc? One of the guys next door (army mechanic) has said he will have a go at doing it if i get the parts etc, he has only ever worked on army landrovers but assures me it cant be much different lol.

Anybody give advice on what parts i will need?? and how much of a job is it to do? :*

Also if he cant do it and i need to take it to a garage (3miles away) will it be ok to drive or should i trailer it? Think i know the answer to this one already

As always.

Thank you T:

So yet to get it to the garage as i was phoning for more quotes. My mate dave came round, tightened the big bolt in the middle of the hub......... no more noise

He said leave it for a couple of days and see if the noise comes back. Has anybody had this before??? When he was turning the hub the shaft was clicking on the gearbox end, he was unsure if this was normal.

Not sure about the clicking, but if this solves your problem, I would still change the hub bolt as I think they are stretch bolts, you may also have damaged the wheel bearing, as you should never have the full load of the van on a loose bolt.

Best of luckT:

unsure if its solved or prolonged it. Will see what happens over the next few miles. fingers crossed its ok, everything else seems to be solid, as solid as i can see but i am no mechanic lol. Still going to put it in a garage for a health check T:

There like the Crank Pulley Bolt on 1.9TD, if not done correctly or if you re-use them they will come loose or snap suddenly.
only a couple of quid from VW

PS. if you were replacing the drive shaft you would also need the 6 inner hub bolts as also stretch bolts.

Do you know what, i bloody love this forum. Better than speaking to any mechanic in a shop. No nonsense honesty that saves you money. I never even knew what stretch bolts where? :*

Thank you one and all T:
