Extremely slow process crafter camper thing

After my beloved t5.1 died a week or so ago, and I really did love that machine, I needed some new wheels.

For a bit of background I live in Wales but don't actually work there, so for the last 6 years or so my van has been my van but also my travelling bedroom, some years spending on 100 nights a year in it. I'd kept the t5 as versatile as possible with collapsible beds and all sorts but truth be told I'd outgrown the space and always wanted something bigger. The dream has always been a lwb crafter (other brands are available) but when reality came into play I had to be realistic and go with a mwb as its my (turns out thirsty) daily driver.

So after a week of some heavy autotradering and steady increase in budget I've ended up with this 69 plate, mwb crafter, 140bhp in white. My least favourite colour van is white. All my vans have been white. I need more money.
Anyway, she ticked most of the boxes (140 so only 1 turbo to go wrong, a/c, decent mileage) but didn't have cruise control which I figured I could retrofitted later on. Turns out I don't think it's that simple but that's for another post.

After buying my last van in the dark I said I'd never buy a vehicle in the dark again and had a general rule that I'd never buy a rental (rental vans = fastest van you'll ever drive) but because trains are rubbish I ended up buying her in the dark so there were new dents and chips thr day after and after some rummaging around I found a europcar keyring so she's a rental. Either way, I've paid my money, I take my chance.

Plans wise I think I'm done with the versatile van thing so I want to make it camper conversion. I want to do a raised bed platform at the back so I can fit my bikes underneath, some kind of unit down the side with all the usual sink/fridge business, solar on the roof, diesel heater, split charge etc etc. I have approx 17.5 million questions for anyone willing to read/answer them but realistically I'm going to start on it in January. Going to start with the bed, then figure out everything from there. Nothing original but functional with some sexy lighting.

Anyway, at time of typing I'm up in Surrey after arriving late for my works Christmas party so can't join them until later (or not as the case will probably be) so I've stripped out the ply and I'm sat wondering how many packs of silent coat to order to give me something to do for the rest of this month and why she's weirdly listing to port.

If you've made it this far congratulations, I ramble alot.

Looks like a great base van to start from. Will be watching with interest. I'd love to do the same but in reality a high-roof big van would be overkill for my daily - I'd need to run a small runabout alongside it for the amount of motorway miles I have to do.
IKEA ally central bed support things seem to be a popular way of building a raised bed platform in the rear.

This is what I'm realising, it is quite a big van. Did the usual commute back from work today, thought I'd drive a bit slower to see what kind of mpg I can get. If I don't mind dying of old age before I get to my destination I can get 37.6mpg (via trip computer so take with a pinch of salt) travelling at 60mph on the clock. Soul crushingly boring but got to think about the wallet. I'm due to receive a little bit of inheritance money soon, may get a little cheap runaround to do the donkey work and save the van doing pointless miles. We shall see.

First night in the van done. Interestingly got up this morning and was hunched over walking around in the back, may take a while to get used to being able to stand up.

Other observations: the stereo sound anemic, I miss my arm rests and I miss cruise control. After a little bit of research I don't think you can just retrofit it like on t5's as it's that silly adaptive cruise control nonsense. So looks like I need to have highline clocks, mfsw and a fancier head unit. None of that sounds cheap

I have a 2010 Crafter, retro fitting cruise was a total PITA.

Putting the unit in was really straightforward but getting it to work baffled several auto electricians locally. Part of the task requires Mercedes diagnostics, the other Vagcom.

In the end I had to resort to getting a plug in module that automatically instructed the relevent systems to talk to each other. Cost several hundred quid but it worked, really for the money you would hope it would do some light flashing, maybe a buzz or a beep or two. No, you plug it in the OBD the light flashes red then moments later turns green and it's Job done...

The complete kit including the KUFATEC dongle is 300 quid atm buying that would have saved me a bit of money and a lot of swearing.

My experience with the crafter, keep cruising speed to 60 - sensible MPG for a big truck (CR50 2.5 MWB) 35 MPG

Start blowing holes in speed limits and generally driving it like you stole it - best get yourself shares in BP - 21 - 22 MPG

It's a shame, for a big van it really can be quite lively, I wish the St John would have them for ambulances rather than the poxy Renaults we have atm.

I think pre '17 shapes it's on a stalk so at least that bits fairly reasonable. Seems like I've got the change the majority of my dashboard for it. Probably should have researched that bit before buying! All about the 7 p's already!

All the aerodynamics of a brick! I soon learned that lesson going from my Passat TDI Sport that would happily return 50-60mpg+ on a motorway cruise. The Transporter does ok hitting 40mpg with big silly wheels etc. but I have to keep my speed below 65mph otherwise it starts to plummet faster than the pound coins out of my wallet. I'm not surprised the Crafter is worse.

she went in for her first (for me) service today and had a good looking over. looks like shes had a side door incident at some point, it's been resprayed and there's a dent in the B pillar but other than that she got a clean bill of health. must admit i've been holding off thinking about stuff unti lit had had a once over, but now it's game on.

also, got introduced to the wonders of kufatec. they do a cruise control kit that i can fit without having to change my clocks, steering wheel and stereo. which is good because highline clocks are £1k + vat!

His videos could easily be half the length if he just actually got to the point.
I find that with quite a few YouTubers, bit too much waffle.

My pet hate is the sponsorship waffle halfway through. Although I guess if you are Y.T full timer it has to pay the wage.

And believe me once you get reasonably high subscribers and high views it REALLY pays.

For example top earner MrBeast made $54 million in 2022 alone, even more now! 🤑

The money in it is lunacy, my 7 year old went through a youtube phase and it was horrendous, the majority of them are just bad humans. And yes the 'this video is sponsored by squarespace' gets really boring really quickly. Made me think maybe I should do some kind of video log but like an anti video log where it's just all my mistakes and a tonne of swearing. Doubt I'll get any free stuff!

Got a bunch of useful information from in-between the nonsense though like the brackets for bed supports from nwcc and stuff, so not a complete waste of time!

OK, she's booked in for window fitting and a roof vent! Hopefully mid Feb. I know people do this stuff themselves and make it look easy but the thought of cutting a massive hole in my van scares me to death (especially after last time and that didnt involve cutting holes) so farming this out. Roof vents aren't cheap eh?
Important first step done, or at least started. Can feel a silent coat order coming on now. Need to dig out my roller. Back to work next week so will have that magical thing they call 'time'
