After my beloved t5.1 died a week or so ago, and I really did love that machine, I needed some new wheels.

For a bit of background I live in Wales but don't actually work there, so for the last 6 years or so my van has been my van but also my travelling bedroom, some years spending on 100 nights a year in it. I'd kept the t5 as versatile as possible with collapsible beds and all sorts but truth be told I'd outgrown the space and always wanted something bigger. The dream has always been a lwb crafter (other brands are available) but when reality came into play I had to be realistic and go with a mwb as its my (turns out thirsty) daily driver.

So after a week of some heavy autotradering and steady increase in budget I've ended up with this 69 plate, mwb crafter, 140bhp in white. My least favourite colour van is white. All my vans have been white. I need more money.
Anyway, she ticked most of the boxes (140 so only 1 turbo to go wrong, a/c, decent mileage) but didn't have cruise control which I figured I could retrofitted later on. Turns out I don't think it's that simple but that's for another post.

After buying my last van in the dark I said I'd never buy a vehicle in the dark again and had a general rule that I'd never buy a rental (rental vans = fastest van you'll ever drive) but because trains are rubbish I ended up buying her in the dark so there were new dents and chips thr day after and after some rummaging around I found a europcar keyring so she's a rental. Either way, I've paid my money, I take my chance.

Plans wise I think I'm done with the versatile van thing so I want to make it camper conversion. I want to do a raised bed platform at the back so I can fit my bikes underneath, some kind of unit down the side with all the usual sink/fridge business, solar on the roof, diesel heater, split charge etc etc. I have approx 17.5 million questions for anyone willing to read/answer them but realistically I'm going to start on it in January. Going to start with the bed, then figure out everything from there. Nothing original but functional with some sexy lighting.

Anyway, at time of typing I'm up in Surrey after arriving late for my works Christmas party so can't join them until later (or not as the case will probably be) so I've stripped out the ply and I'm sat wondering how many packs of silent coat to order to give me something to do for the rest of this month and why she's weirdly listing to port.

If you've made it this far congratulations, I ramble alot.

80 sheets of dodo deadn matt Pro (PRO I TELL YOU!) currently sat in the back of the van. Wind deflectors cab matt and seat covers on their way from vanstyle, will be good to make a start next week. Thankfully mostly funded through the sale of lego and f1 tat I had laying around.
Hit a bit of a stumbling block on the cruise control front, kufatec will supply stalk but not coding. Working on it!

The stalk and throttle pedal are worth diddly without the dongle....

The coding takes seconds with the right dongle, otherwise it's main agent and many of them will not do the coding unless they fit the bits. I would offer to send you my dongle but it's a single use item, it links to your VIN and can be used to re programme if something fails but cannot be used with anything other than the original vehicle

Found this on the evilbay though.

Mine now works really well, though I have not worked out how to set the speed limiter, yet. Could be some hours of innocent fun there.

Not sure on the new shape crafters but fitted cruise to my 2012 2.5 MWB by buying and fitting the stalk kit and throttle pedal off flea bay then booking it into VW commercials in Coventry to talk to Germany. Cost me £75 at dealer in 2018. Had to go with the usual health check c**p telling me it needed £2ks worth of other work which I declined and 60,000 miles later it still hasn’t needed but otherwise def worth doing.
It’s worth noting if you have an auto it doesn’t need the throttle pedal changing as it already has the extra wiring for kick down.

Yeah the new shape and old shape are different systems unfortunately as new one uses that radar stuff for adaptive cruise control. If the kufatec route comes to a dead end I'll bin it off as its not the end of the world, there are companies that retrofit the proper system but I'd need highline clocks (ÂŁ1k + vat fitted and coded), mfsw (ÂŁprobably not cheap) and a fancier stereo (ÂŁalso not cheap). I want it, but I don't want it that bad

As the title suggests, progress has been predictably slow. Just coming to the end of my second pack of dodo deadn matt, will probably need another one. Transporters are way easier in this regard, in crafters its all fiddly with panel supports in the way and all sorts, but I'm getting there.
A long thought lost parcel arrived today of vanstyle tat so I got my wind deflectors in (because, is it really a camper if it doesn't have wind deflectors) and started the process of getting rid of chrome. Anyone know what can be done with that chrome strip at the top of the grille? That's gotta go. Other than that some cheap seat covers and a cheap quite frankly horrid cab matt

But some good news, my window guy has been in touch so windows and roof vent booked in to be fitted next week! Very exciting!

Other than that I'm loving it. Being able to stand up in the morning is an absolute joy.

Nice update! Windows will make a big difference. Looking forward to seeing more soon. (y)

3 things I always hear from folk upgrading from a Transporter to Crafter either in person or on YT etc.
  1. Standing height
  2. Fixed bed
  3. Shower / toilet
My mate has just bought a bare bones 72 plate LWB Crafter in Indium Grey, 12K on the clock for this very reason.

It's now gone to the converters for a full Swamper style conversion, ready by mid April. ÂŁ70K budget inc van.

This is his T5.1 coming up for sale in a month or so to help fund it....

Lovely camper, everything high end: Full interior conversion, Hi Lo roof, Pendle, Bilsteins, Espercher, 350w solar on roof, Vango Kela air awning etc etc

I live a monochrome van life so Matte Black it is! Will add it to the list.

@Orion thats a great looking van, tastefully done. Windows front to back looks great on a lwb. It's not until I bought a big white brick with wheels did I realise how well proportioned the transporter is. Don't think front to back windows would have the same effect on a crafter.

It is a nice van he's selling I must admit. It's SWB too although it does look longer. That extra fake window on the rear panel does make it look longer.

I have decided to remove my rear quarter swamper plastic grilles and add fake windows x 2, just looks so much better.

I will then add swamper grilles to the rear sections between the windows and tailgate. At this rate I won't have much AA yellow left on show! :D

Fake rears are the way, probably the best drunk decision I made on my last van.

Turned 40 today but also got to pick her up from my window guy so a nice little birthday present to myself

Now to navigate the murky world of diesel heaters. Anyone got the skinny on what's good and what's not as its not really in my wheel house and they're all a bit confusing.

No idea, the 2 on my list are the eberspacher d2 and the d4. Worried d2 isn't going to be enough but d4 would be overkill. In reality the chances of me doing deep winter camping is slim so would realistically only need it to take the edge off during summer evenings.
Neither are cheap. Airing on the side of the d4 though because more is more and I'd rather be looking at it than looking for it. I'd be gutted if I got the d2 and spent the next 10 years wishing I'd got a d4

The chinese heaters are the way to go.

Put the fuel tank and pump under the bonnet though.

That way you don't get the smell or the noise.

Running mine on kerosene not diesel and it's really economical and generates decent heat in the back.

The only thing about the Chinese ones is that they have this "thermostat" setting which allows you to control the temperature, only it doesnt't it actually controls the pulse rate on the fuel pump.

Cheers guys, food for thought. I've had to rethink my placement of said diesel heater so going to hold off for a little bit.
Current progress is proceeding at glacial pace but sound deadening in the load bay is done, cracking on with thermo blanket now. Tedious, but gotta be done.

Anyone got any info on water tanks? I think I want to go internal and not massive, thinking around 50 litres. Anything to look out for? Anything I should avoid?

Thanks in advance

Made one of those prototypes that will probably stay forever.
Had skip bound profile laying around so knocked up the frame, used the mounts from new wave conversions. Really heavy duty but took a bit of faffing to get them straight. Most of that probably due to human error.
I know it looks high but can come down a total of 40mm if space allows, will know next week when I collect my bike. Bike garage is looking quite roomy.
I'll finish insulating it soon hopefully, then probably think about making a start on the fancy purchases. All good fun and got to use works nice fancy new table saw.

Look how big that bed is  .....
You are gonna need a bigger mattress though or you'll roll off in the middle of the night ;)
As long as you can sit up in bed then i reckon the space works and who doesnt love a roomy garage
Yeah double mattress will be going in on the weekend when I get back from work, very excited. Sitting up is, kind of achievable but not overly comfy, I think I'll end up lowering it by at least 20mm. Definitely going to need to make some kind of step up though, the lady friend doesn't stand a chance

RE the heater you can buy a thermostat to control the heater and set up a schedule as well, I have one and it works great simply clones the remote signal and controls by Temperature as required or schedules on/off etc
I have the rechargable one lasts forever or plug it into a usb in the van

Day 1 of trying to figure out bike tray business. Episode 1: the tray itself

Seeing as bed framing cost me ÂŁ0 I thought I'd get some of those fancy rockmounts van rails thing for forkmounts. Not the cheapest solution but I thought they'd look sexy. Back of a rizla plan drawn up, lets go. Plan was to have the rails either end (yes I bought 2) so I can do top tail top configuration (ready for eventual 3rd bike), then a run of aluminium profile/timber down the sides to fit the drawer runners on.
Thought I was onto a genuine winner.
Knocked it all up, put it in the van for a test fit, and it'll be too tall by the time I fit a 12mm floor. Gutted.
So after what seemed like eternity of looking at it I went for the not so sexy solution; bolting through the ply. I wanted it to be sexy, and now it's not sexy.
This was only ever meant to be a test fit, a v1 so it's not a killer, but it would been nice if it worked, or if I'd bought a fwd van.
I'm going to sit and look at it for few more days. Will order the runners tomorrow and maybe an idea will present itself.

side note: if anyone knows of anyone after some rockmounts van rails, I know a guy....
