Depends on fuel used, if you pick up a bad batch it could need doing once a year or more often.

When i was a service engineer we used to run ford vehicles and then i religiously filled at tesco for the points. Every 3 months i needed to drain the fuel filter of water.

 

For what it costs I just do mine every year with the oil
