I had a the above advisory on a 55 plate T5. Took the tray off today to have a look and these are the pictures.

Is this really bad enough for an advisory or do you think the tester was just covering his ****?

Am going to wire brush and waxoyl (done about 6 years ago) is there any other advice for this type of job? ... cheers

The parts which he could see behind the cover are rusted, so he advised it is rusted.
Basically it's just to advise the vehicles presenter of a structural area that needs attention to help stop the corrosion getting worse.
Yep suppose its good that I will look at it earlier before it gets worse but was expecting more surface rust than there is for it to appear on an advisory. Cheers for the response

The engine undertray is the main reason why they corrode badly. If you don't have one, the road salt washes straight off. But wiith an undertray you get a layer of damp road silt sitting between subframe and tray, which gets soaked in salt solution in winter. It's too well protected to wash away when driving in the rain, so it sits there, rusting away the subframe. I always brush on a layer of Waxoyl before putting mine back.

That doesn't look especially bad to me. But only you can see if the metal is genuinely getting thin. I have only heard of one that actually needed the subframe changing but there are still thousands of oldies like ours on the road. That looks to about the same rust as mine and I'm just going to give it all a waxoyl in the spring. I leave the undertray off on mine because I like being able to see any leaks or anything quickly.
