pulling my hair out over this, from what i've read (regarding fitting a smev unit) apparently i need one but info available beyond that seems vague!

can anyone tell me where you can buy a gas locker - or failing that whats involved with making one? thanks

Sorry if this is pretty similar to down a few posts but here we go!

A gas locker is just a sealed from the vehicle box which has a drop out for the heaver than air gas to fall out the bus (in essence)!!

There is a part of the regulations that state that the locker must have a certain fire retardant level about 20 mins. Never really seen this applied though:confused:

Here one for camping gas bottles note to cost :blg

Much cheaper and easier to build your own.

The essential things being it is:
- Dedicated
- Sealed
- has a drop out
- bottle fixed in

So just build a wooden box!

Seals just neoprene gasket type seems fine. Dedicated - do not put anything else in there.

Strap buy from screwfix / wickes / b & q & Q & Q Q / etc H:

Do you need more info and the fittings??

Gas regulations seem to be a bit odd in the fact that everyone seems to have a different opinion. I am no kind of gas fitter myself but know a bit from my job.

intresting time for this thread to pop up

ive installed a smev 9222 and coppered to the rear where i was going to site my 907 bottle
but i need a cert for the insurance"sureterm" so spoke with 2 companys local to me
about costs etc 1 said you must have a sealed locker vented the other guy said no need for one at all, both are lpg gas safe WHAT:*:* DO YOU DO

like I say gas regulations seem to be interpreted in all sorts of ways!!

Trust me you do want a sealed (or least sealed-ish) locker with a drop out the most likely leak points are in the locker.

Perhaps all gas safe people are not up on regulations for motor homes:confused:

Guess I would do the locker but go with the guy who thought you did not have to drain it!!!

I was so impressed by the workmanship of a gas locker made for me by a forum member that I put a few snaps on the forum. I've tried to search using my forum name to bring the up but no joy. We have converted to broadband, could this be the cause? Is there a moderator who has access to a larger search area and could display the snaps I'm talking about ? ? ?

The box sat on the step between the forward seats and had circular/tubular legs, these were also vents below the floor of the vehicle to atmosphere. The box itself was secured by an unused bolthole for the passenger seat I also had a strap and bracket inside to secure the bottle.

The manufacturer was wolfboy (a.k.a. Matt) but I haven't heard / read any contributions from him in a while. I'm a tad concerned.:gl I hope everything is O.K. ;) Cheers, Tony.

Yep, good timing on the post Gav, I've just got my smev and am starting to plan/install my kitchen pod etc.

I had seen a thread on here where 'Wolfboy' had made a really smart looking locker for someone. I've PM'd him but no reply yet.

Also, Jerba caravan converters in Scotland have some great looking lockers but I'm not sure if they're available to buy seperately for self-converters.

I'm thinking there's gotta be a cheap metal bin mod that would work?

Still skating Gav? I'm still going strong at 30! T:

Re: gas locker? FOUND IT.

FOUND IT ! If you go to the Converstions page and scroll down to date - 22 - 07 - 08 there is a item called "Another superb job from Wolfboy" there are snaps aplenty! or if anyone knows how to copy and paste it from there to here.......hope it helps. Cheers, ;) Tony.

ok, tell me if I'm going mental but I've been thinking a lot about bins lately!!!

how about modding something like this:

or this:

to work as a gas locker?

You'd have to drill holes for dropout and pipework and seal these....

fix the bin to the van/cupboard......

maybe add some material to the brim/lid inner to improve the lid seal....

fit a bottle retaining strap and also some kind of strap/bungee to keep the lid tight....

what do you reckon??

not sure a tin bin would comply ive bought a rittle box "electrical waterproof steel enclosure" off ebay ÂŁ3.20 T: and by my measurments a 907 will fit tight in
will let you no when it arrives

well the box turned up and its spot on

300x300x200 fits a 907 in, has enough room at top for regulator it has 4 mountong holes in the rear and a water tight seal around the complete door it has a twist turn lock so as you turn the lock barrel the seal is forced tight to the box and it has 2 keys too"bonus"

all seams welded too all for ÂŁ14-30 new old stock, off ebay these are only about 40 quid form the wholesalers

this must be the cheapest way to go i think

I've just placed an order for a steel enclosure like iss's one.

from what I could tell its a Sarel model and can be found in the RS catalogue number 207-7260 at http://uk.rs-online.com/web/home.html

Information and photos are a little vague but the catch and measurements are the same.

It cost ÂŁ55 including postage (not as cheap as I hoped but can't find any on ebay.)

I'll pop some pics up when it arrives.

thought i would update this a little

had the installation tested today by a gas safe caravan bod as i require a cert for my insurance

he turned up tested the pipe run done all the presure/drop test etc etc and put a smoke pellet in the box and shut the door "fiingers crossed at this point"box 100% sealed and smoke poured out of the drop out vent

he was happy gave me the cert im happy;) saved about 70 quid doing it this way,as the bod said needs to be steel, needs to be sealed, and needs a drop out vent
