Got rid of my front wing air intake sponge!

Am I missing something or is the late t4 front wing foam behind the air intake vent a stupid idea? Getting round to sorting jobs on mine since getting it and one is that the wing has started rusting below the vent. Got this mesh replacement and fitted it yesterday http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Transp...nlet-intake-Grille-Mesh-/121586682044?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item1c4f2188bc
Well, whipped off the airbox and sure enough the original foam was sopping wet and inner wing full of wet muddy gunk! No wonder it's rusted. Why was foam considered to be a good idea when it can get wet and hold moisture/rainwater? Anyway, cleaned all gunk out, treated the metal and fitted mesh instead (glued it on as don't have any gaffa tape). Would recommend this if you haven't done it. It was too late for mine (rust started) but catch yours before it rusts!

Your airbox needs removing to get to it but simple enough. Mine (2.4d engine) had one metal bolt on the right, easy to see, and the rest were just rubber push on/pull off mountings to the inside wing. Obviously take clip on lid off first. I could manipulate the box enough to get it out of the way but complete removal was too tight without removing something else. Foam just pulls out. You could probably see condition of foam through the slats with a torch beforehand. Even if you want to put the foam back if it's not mossy, it's worth at least inspecting the inner wing for mud and cleaning it out.

I would have used gaffa tape if I had some cos the mesh from eBay is fairly oversized for the vent (if done carefully it wouldn't be visible on the edges from the outside). I just used superglue (not ideal as not much mesh can make contact with the body, but it's still stuck in place after several journeys so it's worked OK). Silkaflex or similar is advised by the eBay seller.

The mesh is just to help stop large debris getting in like leaves I think. Your air filter will catch anything that gets in anyway so not a big worry. Maybe take out and check filter & check bottom of box more often though, wouldn't hurt.
