instrument cluster

Hi Folks, I've a 1998 VW T4 1.9 TD which I've had since 2004.
About 4 years ago the clocks (instrument cluster) started going crazy.
All the moving bits i.e. speedometer / fuel gauge / temp gauge were either moving erratically or not at all. All the warning lights however worked fine. I ended up getting a 'new' instrument cluster off ebay. This one has now developed the same problem plus the battery / handbrake warning lights don't work.
Has any body got a fix or work around for this?
Are there any clocks from other VWs that work?
I believe this is a problem with 96-98 years - the first with non mechanical speedometers. I'm having no luck finding a replacement. Surely the van isn't a right off because of this? Please help.
Cheers Gilly

Hi Rich -thanks for the info.
I've often thought about retro fitting an older one but with not finding any info on anybody doing it I thought it wasn't possible - and just buying one on the off chance isn't an option for me. I may end up sending it off to a 'repair company' - though I've heard it's all a bit hit and miss..... Cheers, Gilly
