Insurance tips for a modified van?

Hi,

I'm just about to do the deal on a T5 with a pop-up roof and did not check my insurance beforehand.

....I know, it's an obvious and lazy mistake to make, but here we are...

Anyway, a quote for this van, non modded, is £190. If I select the "has it been modified" option because of the roof, the price jumps up to £600. Actually, selecting that option with Direct Line (who I have my car insurance with) gives me the message "we can not offer insurance for this type of vehicle". The next best quote I could find was with AdrianFlux @£600.

This is my first van so I'm just hoping to get any advice or tips from people who have been doing this for years. My main car is a Subaru Impreza WRX and it's only £390 a year. I naively assumed a T5 would not be more than a Subaru.

For what it's worth, I'm in my 40's with no offences etc.

Thanks for any help!

Thanks Frase, I've just had a look at Just Kampers and their online quote gave me a much better price. With the NCB set to zero years it quoted me £255. Something I became aware of today is that my no claims bonus only applies to the vehicle I was insuring when I claimed them, which confused me at first, and still does a bit. I'll give them a call tomorrow to see if they can take in to account me having over a decade of no claims on another car.

I see someone mentioned Greenlight on here but it's an old post. I'm going to try them tomorrow as well. I'll post back if I get a good result. Thanks again!

The ones that pop up all the time are Just Kampers, Greenlight, A-Plan, Flux and Brentacre. I've been with Brentacre nearly 6 years now since I got the van and they don't charge extra for visual mods (so when I fitted my air ride, just called them and they made a note of it - zero increase for fitting a few grands worth of suspension!).

Flux I had a few quotes from and were never able to get anywhere near Brentacre.

I ended up with the best price from Just Kampers, although it's worth noting it's actually Herts Insurance Consultants. The price came in at £200 after a bit of haggling, which is a massive improvement on yesterday. I've always gotten my insurance through fairly big names like Direct Line so I was a bit nervous doing this... I'll have to look in to it to reassure myself.
