Oi oi, not long ago bought a T5 panel van which Im planning on converting into a kombi/bike van to make weekend trips away on the mountain bikes a tad easier. Plan is to convert to kombi with 2+1 in second row, leave the single out when my bike is in and the kids bikes mounted behind the double. Fully insulated and carpeted interior, spinning front seats and a table between the two rows. Leisure battery and solar with dc-dc/ac-dc charger, night heater with duct into storage box to dry clothes/shoes and a few other bits and pieces.
Planning on doing all the work myself as I was a mechanic for 9 years and an auto spark for 3 before getting out of the motor trade all together, don't miss the work but do have more of a desire to tinker on stuff of my own. Gonna do a build thread once I get things shifting, just collecting parts just now.

Ciao

Sounds great, our T4 is mostly our MTB day van too.

One word of advice, get a bike rack on the back too, if you're not stopping overnight (where security is a risk), having the bikes outside the van is great for muddier/wetter days and is often easier for loading/unloading while you or the kids are getting into or out of your gear in the back of the van (y)

Welcome aboard spicy, always great to see a new build on the horizon. A number of us have built our vans to accommodate out bikes, loads of options and ideas but sounds like you've already got your plans in place.

@64 SPLIT built an awesome multi purpose bus, it's worth checking out his build thread for ideas, at the very least, it's just a great read. His thread is here.

Welcome.

There is a guy on Singletrack forum and the [clears throat] 'other' forum called Tall-Paul, he converted a Caravelle for solo biking and sleeping. Really good.

We use ours for camping, mtb and road bikes, inside and out and on the top. I prefer the door mounted rack, yes its a PitA for four mtb's but with practice you get good. Main reason is its always there and it also makes a stunning towel airer when camping. I also dont have the room for the 4x tow bar rack to store when its off the van. Good luck.

Thanks for all the welcomes. I already have a decent Thule towbar mounted bike rack that I use on the back of my trusty Volvo (300k mikes and counting) just now. The T5 already has a tow bar so I will have that option. Sorry not got any photos of the van yet, I bought it locally at the end of Nov and it's been sitting in my mate's yard since. Winter is a busy time of year for me at work so as I say just collecting parts the now and will get cracked on with the conversion in spring.

On the topic of bike racks, have yous had a look at the one MTBvans sell to mount the bike upright directly onto one of the barn doors, it does look cool but I'm not sure about the practicality of it. They do some cool builds which are worth a look on their Instagram if you haven't already.

Not come across this company before, will certainly give them a look as I've been battling with furniture designs since I bought my van back in 2019, housing my mtb has snookered me at every turn as I always wanted it in the van with me rather than on display, but I am more open to the bike rack option these days, more so as it means I can make better use of the space in the van if not having to leave space for a bike.

Thanks for the heads up, always interested to see a new idea (y)

That sounds like an awesome project—super practical setup for bike trips and really well thought out with the 2+1 seat arrangement and ducted heating to the storage. I recently helped a friend label all their custom van gear and kids' stuff, and one of the most useful little additions was using stick on name labels to keep jackets, gloves, and even kit bags from getting mixed up. Great for outdoor gear that moves between van and trail. Looking forward to seeing your build thread when you kick things off!
