Hi All,

Just purchased a 13 Plate Ex RAC Van that I am planning on converting (Slowly) by myself to a Camper Van - Been a childhood dream to own a VW Camper - so excited to get started on the conversion.

There is so much choice, any recommendations on which Sound Deadening, Insulation and Carpeting to use??

I plan on doing this first as well as putting in Windows before I save up for part 2 - Furniture, Bed and Maybe Pop Top Roof.

Any recommendations gratefully appreciated

Cheers in advance

Hi, loads of pics etc in the build threads section but most people choose Dynamat for soundproofing (makes a big difference to road noise), recycled insulation (B&Q etc) a non moisture retaining type, or/and alu backed bubble wrap, and then mega stretch carpet from Mega van mats. Make sure you get high melting point glue so it doesn't fall off during our blistering summers :D.

I just got one of these things too. I’m doing the soundproofing and insulation at the moment. I’m using Kiravans sound proofing tiles and am pretty pleased to be honest. They come with a sticky back and are very easy to fit. I’m only planning on putting in one window (drivers side rear) and needed around 20 tiles for the back of the SWB T5. I did a Vito conversion a couple of years ago and didn’t do sound proofing, the heat insulation did a pretty good job for sound TBH but I thought i’d go the whole hog this time.
For heat insulation I’m using low-e reflective foil insulation off eBay. I used this on my Vito and I’d really recommend it. Very easy to cut and manipulate and it’s really warm. You’ll need trim fix to stick it on.
I found fitting carpet a pain last time so am considering getting it done professionally this time. However it’s a few hundred around my way so I might just bite the bullet and do it myself. Time will tell.
I’m having a job working out the random additional RAC wiring. There seems to have been a leisure battery under the passenger seat that’s been removed. The wring is there but quite a few extra ones. Any ideas?
Decided against a pop top myself

Thanks StealthHotel for your comments appreciated and some good advice - My firm actually fund the RAC vehicles, so I am in the process of trying to get a copy of all the wiring diagrams etc. from the converter - Happy to share if I can get them

Talldan thanks for your note - some reading for me to do and hopefully help me get my Orange Beast to look more of a camping dream
