Sticky piston ring or turbo seals?

Hi all. Apologies if this issue has been covered elsewhere. I did look but I couldn;t find a thread. My 2002 T4 has suddently started to pour our light blue smoke on start up (oil burning I guess) but easies after driving, The van was stood for a month or so. I have given the van a good run by the problem remains which is a worry! I have been told that it could be a sticky piston ring or the turbo seals but is it likely as I have not had a problem with the engine before leaving it standing. I would have thought that there would have been some earlier signs but this is not the case. if it is likely to be a sticky piston ring how can I sort it? The van is generally running well and is not losing power. I had the oil changed not long before storing my van and I don't know which type of oil the guy used. Could this be the problem?

I have put some Redex in the tank but it is too early to say if this is making any difference. I don't know if the van is using excessive oil and I don't think there is a gead gasket problem. I am not much use practically so any guidance and advice would be very much appreciated! Worried that this could be expensive to sort and I can't afford to be ripped off. The van has done 112k and has been well looked after. Cheers. Dave :(:(

:) If it was fine before the oil change and all that has happened is you have not run it for a few weeks, then my money would be on the oil, I have just changed my oil (same type and grade) and it appears to blow a little more light blue at first, then dissapates as it warms up, I seem to recall it did this after my last change too.

Hi pal,
Mines a 52 plate 2.5tdi and developed same problem in that it got to a stage where i had lot of blue oil burning exhaust from cold start or when under load...i.e. uphill or foot down on mway. I took it to my local VW experts at MVE in Telford who do lots of engine builds and conversions and diagnosed issue as inaccurate pump timing causing diesel wash and allowing oil back the other way.....turned out it was a mile out so they reset it for me and although I still get a bit from cold its a whole host better. I guess what still comes out from start up is just signs of wear on a 165k motor so I've tried some 'Motor Restore' (link below) to help the situation, its been in now for a while and think it's also helped. It might be worth checking the timing but as you say maybe the oil used is a little light.....I'd drop some oil flush in there run it up as specified on the brand used, drain it and replace the oil. At least you'll know whats been used and know that a lot of the crud has been removed from the oilways/sump etc.
