I'm keen for an update too please.

Got no worries about the engine and gearbox, its just that crazy angled driveshaft that is concerning me.

Im building a 2.5tdi to go in my 2.4 but am a bit apprehensive about forking out over £900 for a gearbox.
Especially when a 130 pd engine and 6 speed box can be picked up for £200

The op hasn't logged in for over 18 months....you may have to wait from him for a reply :(

Hey guys, so my friend an I have recently bought a 1996 1.9td (ABL) SWB 800 Special T4 and I plan to convert it to run a PD130 (ASZ) engine from a mk4 golf, with a 6 speed 02M (EFF) gearbox. Now this is something that seems to be quite the elusive build. I've found a few people that have started these, but I cannot seem to find anyone who has even mounted the engine, let alone anything anywhere close to a finished running product.

So, this is my build thread. It is also a thread for conversion into a day van as well as the engine conversion. It is also a project I am going to see though to the end, so I'm going to keep this thread updated with pictures for others who may want to attempt this conversion, and if there is anyone else who has done this, then I will more than happily accept any pointers!

Would you be interested in making me the engine mounts you used

Okay, so the update on this van is that it was broken for parts and then scrapped unfortunately. It wasn't me who owned the van, and the owner wasn't keen on the idea of the van always being a bit of a project, especially because he wanted to use it daily. It was definitely more a project for me, I was trying to prove a point and just be able to say its possible and that I've done it.
I learned a lot during the project, and although it was ultimately a success because it was on the road for nearly a year, there's definitely plenty of things id do slightly different if I were to do the job again.

Hi mate, a few more questions! Got the engine and box mounted but the driveshafts are too short, did you have to lengthen yours? What inlet manifold are you using? Cheers
The track on the t4 is slightly wider than the mk4 golf, so to get around this I mounted the engine slightly closer to the offside so the gap was on the nearside for the longer shaft. To make the shaft slightly longer, I actually got hold of two shafts from a mk4 golf, took apart the inner cv joint and used the outer part of the joint to fill the gap. I bolted the two together onto the flange on the gearbox using longer, thicker, high tensile bolts and it worked perfectly.
Hi bud, what throttle pedal did you use?
I used the pedal out of the mk4 golf, and fabricated a bracket to mount it into a comfortable position.

Hi, I'm from Poland, I'm building T4 ASZ 02m, when I'm finished, I'll share my advice :) View attachment 192237
Looking good. Do you have any closer photos of your gearbox mounts (especially the lower one)? I’m hoping to restart working on mine again soon.

I am in the US and have done this conversion in a 2000 T4, but with the ALH engine. I currently have over 40,000 miles in three years. I had a set of custom axles made by Dutchman Axles in Meridian, Idaho that uses the factory T4 joints. It is hung on two right side motor mounts with a piece of plate steel between the Mk4 and the T4 mounts.
