Glad it is off help to some off you, putting it back in is actually a lot quicker than taking it out, don't be put off by the last picture. Bit off a tight squeeze with the steering wheel left in position (it has an airbag so I didn't want to mess with it) but I would recommend removing the steering wheel if you don't have an airbag. T:

 

Sorry to revive an old thread... How did you get on with removal of the cold start pull lever? Did one at the scrap yard and ended up cutting the cable.

Don't want to do that on my own van!!!

Hi Piers,

Mine was the 2.5tdi version and where I think the cold start lever is on it (right hand side of dash) there was just a blank.

However from my workshop manual "remove the clip a the rear of the handle, twist the handle off the operating cable and remove the nut" Hope this helps. T:

Yeah, lot easier than it looks... To refit the dash, an extra pair of hands is a must. It's a bit of a twist and turn to get it back in place, even without the steering wheel in place and plenty of places to ruin your new paintjob.

 

One tip to make life easier... Take the steering wheel off!

How do all the vent grilles and switch panels come off?

 

As far as I can remember the vents, flat panel etc are a push/slot in type of arrange so a small flat bladed screwdriver required to prise them out/off.

I realise that this is nearly 12 months old but I thinking about this doing this today, this guide will prove very helpful when I get time to do it. (Hopefully soon). T:

 

The cold start lever has a C-clip through the handle itself- pop that off and thread the cable through the dash

 

I did this a cpouple of weeks ago. That cold start clip is weird. its more like a rounded capital E. once thats out the handle unscrews.
Used bog standard halfords matt black and its really cleaned up the look! 2 cans did the dash and the door cards.
worthwhile making a list of jobs you want/need doing before as there are quite a few accesible work areas when the dash is out. I swapped my aerial and soldered my fuel/temp gauges while everything was out.

 

Great thread very useful, I just saw the VW paper slip with the option codes in your dash and thought this might interest you.

If you follow this link and punch in the letters and numbers on the slip and it will tell you exact spec your Bus left the factory with.

disconnect the battery and the air bag wont go off. however if you were really safety concious, then follow the wiring back from the steering and the airbag circuit are made up of 3mm yellow cables with detachable connector blocks. Bear in mind that it only takes a 9volt battery to set one of these off, please be very careful when removing the dash, having tools between the airbag and you if one was to go off could be catastrophic.

Sorry to re light this thread but someone else had posted the link stating it was the muts nuts in showing dash removal.

If you or anyone else on this thread can help I'd be extremely grateful.

I've got a problem with my windscreen heater blowers. I think the wire has come off the directional flaps which open and close it allowing air upwards.

A very nasty frost hit my van this am and I was unaware of the problem till I left for work at 3.30! Needless to say I was late and the drive very dangerous itself due to a non clearing screen!

Please help, how do I get to the linkage which operates the flap?
