T4 Vacuum Oil leak...

Hi everyone,

Need some help please. My '98 R 800 Special 1.9TD T4 (221k on the clock and still pulling and looking well!) has a leak from what I think is the area of the Vacuum pump thing.
I'm reliably informed that's what it's called by my father in law in any case.
If the engine was a petrol engine, this is apparently where the distributor would sit.
Anyway, it leaks all the time. Not loads an loads but it leaks. Now obviously it's not going to fix itself so I'd like to know the following please:
1, I've been told there is a rubber 'O Ring' on the shaft that goes into the crankcase which may be passing, is this right?
2, Is this a common thing, has anybody else had this problem?
3, Is it going to be a fairly simple fix? (I cut my teeth on beetles and T2s so I do know one end of a spanner from the other).
4, Where can I get an O Ring from?

Thanks very much for your anticipated responses T:

Steam clean the engine off and run it for a while first so you can pinpoint the leak. If its leaking from the vacuum pump you can get a new sael from a VW dealer for a couple of pounds. I had the same problem. (Hope thats any help).

Thanks guys,

I've cleaned it previously with that Gunk engine cleaner stuff, it's definately not the oil filter or the breather, it's definately coming from the vacuum unit thing.
Plan is to get it up on the ramps, try and strip down the vacuum, clean it then reseal it.
If after running for a few days it's leak free, I'll be a happy camper!

Any other suggestions will be gratefully accepted.
Thanks again.:cheers

Just done mine i replaced #2 and #6 seals. put it all back then realised its leaking from #3 I:

Part on order with TPS will do it on monday. Easy job to do though.

I originally thought the oil filter housing and the breather pipe next to it was leaking. So replaced them as well because i couldn't be bothered to take the gaskets back. Oil leaks sorted for a while now fingers crossed.

access to (8) the bolt that secures it is a bit tricky with the engine in place, whatever you do make sure this is torqued up and a bit of loctite applied.

Having had problems with a blocked airway inside the shaft of my oil pump, and consequently removing the vacuum pump during diagnosis, i didnt loctite the bolt back up nor did i torque it up, just did it as tight as i could and 2000 miles later bolt came loose, vacuum pump lifted doing 80 on the motorway, oil pump drive ceased and bang.

End of TDi engine number one! Expensive lesson
