T5 to T5.1 no high beam flash on dipped beam setting

Hello,
I've done a number of searches and I'm clearly missing a trick here...

I have fitted adaptor harnesses to my 08 T5 which now wears T5.1 headlights with H7 bulbs. VW Transporter T5 To T5.1 T6 Facelift Headlight Adapter Harness Upgrade | eBay

Whilst I can get all of the lights to work, when I select dipped beam (normal lights) the flash option does not work for high beam.
I can select high beam by pushing the stalk forward and if I drop the switch to side lights or off the flash option works.

As difficult as it is doing this on my own during the day, I think I can see that the dipped beam and high beam are in the same lamp.
Would this be by design to stop the lamp filaments from overheating? That doesn't quite make sense if that's the case but I'm clutching at straws with that one.

During the van build, I've also changed the stalks to include cruise control using the correct VAG stalk, it is wired as per instruction. VOLKSWAGEN TRANSPORTER T5 - CRUISE CONTROL KIT - COMPLETE - GENUINE VW - NEW | eBay

I'm a little confused as to why the high beam won't flash when on dipped beam. Can you give me any advice as to whether I need to make any wiring modifications?
I'm happy to strip the steering cowling back and recheck my wiring if needs be - it's the fact it works on the off/sidelight function that's baking my brain.

If it's a case of programming it as the advert suggests, I've enabled cruise control as per the instructions but there was no other advice with the kit.

Thanks
Wayne

Are your T5.1 twin headlight which have H7 dip and H15 main beam bulbs or single which have twin filament H4 bulbs, your post seem conflicting and I think the wiring may be different for each type. It may be the dip coming on when you flash which is why it doesn't change when dip lights are on.

Hi,
Please forgive my ignorance, i'm not an expert on these things so bear with me.

I don't believe these are twin headlights as per these, Twin H7 Headlamp Unit Offside (Right) VW T5 2003–2010 - J20149

They are more like these, Standard H4 Headlamp Unit Offside (Right) VW T5 2010–2015 - J20154

The twin lamp units appear to have a step in the chrome bezel in the outer headlamp which mine doesn't according to the pictures I have to hand so I assume they are standard.

On mine, the inner lamp is illuminated the moment the ignition is on so i regard this as DRL - if I'm wrong then i'm happy to be educated.

DRL only

DRL + sidelight (camera on flash so sidelight looks weak)

DRL + sidelight + dipped beam

DRL + sidelight + dipped beam + high beam

There is certainly a difference between dipped beam and high beam.

I can pull the lamps out tomorrow and check what type they are.

I bought the headlamps from ebay, the seller advertised them as H7 upgrades not that I know exactly what that means - I just know they're better than H4...

Ok, I've had my head in there again and got the wife on the flashers (oooh errr).

High beams are definitely activating on flash when on sidelights, 100%.
Dipped are working fine, high beam doesn't activate when asked to flash, 100%.
High beams work on dipped beam when activated to latch, 100%.

I pulled the cover off the back of the single combination H4 as described by Dave V (thank you).
There is a bunch of conversion cabling in there with a module.

It's minus 1 outside and my fingers couldn't get the lamps out, I lost the will to live so gave up for today.

I'll investigate the module tomorrow when there's more light.

Have the same issue with a set of h4 led converion lamps. everything works fine just that I can’t flash the high beam when in “dipped” mode. it never worked with this leds, worked fine with halogen lights. what is the work around to get this working with h4 leds? can it be fixed with coding?

I have a 2015/10 T6

I'm not sure you will get an answer here for a T6. I have a feeling that the operation of the headlight stalk is different on a T6 than a T5 or T5.1? If I'm remembering correctly from when I had a T6 on loan, they don't have the three positions for the headlight stalk that the earlier vans do, but only two positions?

In your situation, I would want to understand if the limitation is built into the LED conversion itself, by connecting it up to a 12V power supply and seeing if it will allow both dipped and main beams to operate at the same time. I would not be surprised to find that they are designed for one to suppress the other, because overheating could easily destroy the LED components.

Ah ok - I must be remembering the T6 that I drove incorrectly. I thought they had changed to a system where pulling the stalk towards you flashes the headlamps and also toggles between main and dipped beam - so there is no "forward" position for main (high) beam. I must be thinking of a different car that I borrowed at some stage!

Sure it wasn’t a t6.1? Mine is the first t6 (late 15) generation produced. Feels like it’s more close to t5.1.

Anyway, my problem is identically as described here. So it can’t be a coincidence.

Leds are basically diods, only flowing current one way.
With halogens in averything worked. With leds in with the canbus resistors from manufacturer
If the led the flashing function is lost when the low beam is on. With low beam
Off flashing works.

I was hoping someone else had encountered this with h4 leds.
I haven’t had time measure anything. Just did the conversion. Found this topic here and felt it was the only one on the whole internet marching my problem.
