What class MOT? Help!

Hello all.

I have just taken my 2007 T5 Factory T32 Kombi (5 seat) to the MOT station to be told the vehicle is no longer considered Class IV and is dual purpose, which is possibly Class V, but could even be Class VII.

The expiring certificate is Class IV and the station happily tested a previous Kombi as a Class IV a couple of years back. Probably not the same tester though.

I've Googled the problem and searched this forum but nothing has come up.

Can anybody help on clarification? Have the rules been changed?

its no problem, the garage, if its any good, should be guiding you... they will test it if they can and if not they should prepare it and then send it to someone they know who can test it if can't... if you are not getting this sort of help/service from them then you are using the wrong garage!!

T5 Kombis are type approved M1 on the log book (passenger carriers) so they are all class 4. When the T5GP came out the Kombi changed to N1 commercial so a 3.2 tonner will be class 7 as it would be if it were a panel van.

Hi Bobley & fellow Vdubers,

Stumbled upon this thread whilst trying to find best approach to get rear seats on rail system (VW genuine parts) fitted and certified correctly.

I,ve got a bog standard 55plate Panel Van (N1 commercial), originally factory fitted with 3 seats in the front.

I want to carry my family of four in my van of which will also soon have full side windows.

I have bought a complete 7 seat interior with rails that came out of a Kombi I guess.

MY QUESTION(s)?

I want the rails fitted 'safely' and understand that the 'Van' NOT 'People Carrier/Kombi' doesnt have the same floor reinforcements so is there anyone in the UK who supplies or Supplies/Fits & Certifies (Certificate of Conformity) VW rails for the full 5 seats in rear BUT into a T5 Panel Van (N1). Preferably near the south east but willing to travel?

OR

Do VW do backing plates for the 11 bolts that hold down the individual rails to the floor/chassis? If so are these specifically for the N1 Van as strengtheners? and are they available for DIY fit and could a local garage certify these?

Any advice greatly appreciated,
Hound.

It depends on window size!
If window area is more than 1.8m squared then it is deamed as a class 4a dual purpose vehicle,

If smaller than that then will be class 7,
If much more or dvla converted to window van then will be class 4.

Only difference is class 7 can be softer on brakes, but load ratings on tyres come into mot.
(That and the price)

Thanks for all you replies.

I revisited the garage today with my log book and showed them the details of M1 and DIESEL CAR as stated. The tester on duty (not the same as yesterday) agreed that it was due a Class 4 test and duly booked it in for Monday.

I'll let you know if it gets refused again, not sure which tester will be working Monday.

It seems that the unladen weight is also an important factor.
The test station I took my 2007 T32 2.5 kombi to today couldn't test it as it's unladen weight is over 2040kg, despite it being a 'diesel car' and a multi purpose vehicle which I thought made it class 4.
Took it to another place that does comercial vehicles, they aggreed on the 2040kg rule and tested as class 7.
It passed anyway, which is good and has the correct class MOT, apparently they can be revoked if the class is incorrect?

I'm still confused. I have a 55 plate 2.5 T30, some say although on v5 it states N1 and its under 2,000kg it only needs a Class 4, but on other sites they say as an N1 it needs a Class 7.

Can any give a definitive answer, even though the DVLA sites seem contradictory ?

"Goods vehicles (over 3,000kg up to 3,500kg design gross weight)" ( from Getting an MOT )

T30 has a max design weight of 3000kg so it is always Class 4.

T32 has a design weight of 3200kg so falls into Class 7 if its a goods vehicle ie. N1 on the log book (but not converted into a camper). Old Kombis are M1, newer T5.1 onwards Kombis are N1 so they fall into Class 7.

Not sure if it helps but I have a 55 plate t32 that I had to have class 7 before I had it reclassified as a motor caravan and now I got to the same place as I take my car bearing in mind they couldn’t do it before.

I was under the impression when they log on to dvla to log it if they don’t have that classification they can’t do it.

Prior to being reclassified I had to fit load rated tyres but now as long as they’ve got tread they said it didn’t concern them ( i still have the correct tyres before anyone says anything)
