2.4D AAB Turbo/PP3 Project

Been doing some research on here and other sites and decided to go down the Turbo route for my 2.4D AJA Engine :D

The T4 2.4D Transporter is now getting Turbo'd need abit more power and after driving the VRS for a week i need more power for towing with the T4.

Any advice would be greatley appreciated especially part numbers for the Oil feed pipework.

The engine has 94k on the clock and is a good solid unit.

All ducks almost in a row for the conversion this weekend.

Just spent four remarkably unpleasant hours cleaning the most HORRENDOUS e out of the 2.5 TDi inlet manifold im installing........... the EGR is evil and must DIE!!! Seriously WTF?! How can that be good for an engine??!!

Hope the weekend weather is good!!!!

Fitted boost controler today at moles and thought it was set right Untill I pulled on to the motorway got to 70mph and thought wow that turbo is loud then looked at boost gauge and it was past 1.5 bar against the stop lol , so slowed down to 50 and it was still at 0.8 bar , but boy it pulls well
Now adjusted to .8 max so not to blow it up lol
If only the engine could cope with 1.5+ it was so responsive and just pulled like a train

I'm soon going to being doing this, already got the turbo, manifolds, oil lines and dipstick, also have a fuel pump with LDA on its way. I'm using all ACV stuff, just the rest of it to collect now. Can't wait to get it all fitted T:

A question for Brookster (or anyone else that knows) as I think he already this setup. With the LDA it needs to be Tee'd into the hose between the turbo and actuator, and I'm planning on fitting a boost controller (already have a turbosmart one), should it be plumbed in as turbo - boost controller - T off to LDA - actuator Or turbo- T off to LDA - boost controller - actuator? Or is it a completely different way?

I'll probably have lots more questions as I go but just collecting parts at the moment whilst I sort my otherhalf's mini and get rid of my golf. Looking forward to the results going by what everyone says though :D

Connect the LDA Boost pipe directly to the inlet boost pipes

Don't connect them to the Boost Controller pipework as that's kids the Actuator into thinking the pressure is lower so you achieve hgher boost. it will work in there but i would connect it to its own source.

Connection to LDA from inlet and tee off to Boost Gauge

I'm IN!!!!!

Hoo f*&king rah I'm in the club!!!! Finally got the beast running after an engine swap and turbo addition at the weekend. Had a few dramas in the form of a leaking fuel pump and a fuel supply issue but finally at 2101 this evening the beast sprang into life!!

Ive currently not adjusted the fuel yet or sorted the turbo adjustment so the turbo is showing just over ambient and rising to about 0.3 when the revs are increased. Ive got to give the new lump a good looking over and check all bolts/pipes/fasteners and give it a bit of a test drive. Ive driven it a short distance (0.5 miles) around the local area and it seems slightly more responsive but as the turbo is un-fettled i wasnt expecting much.

Question to the guru's..... as this turbo is as standard from a 2.5TDI, what do i need to set it up? Ive read talk of adjusting the armature quite a bit, to what end? Where should the boost guage be sat at tickover? As i understand it the fuel needs increasing as well, how do i know how much is enough??

I'm afraid i dont undertand what these three variables need to satisfy so i cannot make an informed decision. I've fitted a boost guage and an EGT guage so these are my diagnostic tools to hand.

Any help would be much appreciated!!

Did I mention???

I'm IN!!!!!

Wind the acuate bolt towards the acuater for more boost , not sure about pump as I had problems with over doing it and such so I reset it and now I only get a puff of smoke when I boot it
My boost gauge running at 0.6 now and in normal driving it gets to about 0.4 and in tick over its on 0
I'm happy with how mine is and will keep it like it as its never going to be a race car and I hear every noise thinking ohh is that something braking lol it has done 235k so who knows how long it will last hence low boost lol
Well done in ur van I'm sure ur get some help With setting it up

Hi,
Love your work mateT:
I just wanted to know a few things, if that's ok?

Is the engine pick up speed noticeably different over a standard 2.4d? if it is, What's the grin factor score out 10 ?:D

I think that the 2.4d is a very noisey engine when inside the cab area while driving and I was wondering, with the turbo installed did it help to quieten things down a bit when giving in some welly? And does the whole engine sound different? Puur factor score? :ILU:

Daft questions i know but i am seriously considering this 2.4td route over the 1.9tdi conversion, It's cheaper too which helpsT:
Apparently the golf engine purrs & is so quiet, does the 2.4TD do the same? :D

Am i right in thinking that this will take my 1999 2.4d right up to 100 ponies ?H:

How different is the whole pulling power in general, a bit more over taking speed or a LOT more ?

Thanks for taking the time to read :D

Cheers mate, very excited now A:

Grin factor 10 X 10 T:

2.4D NASP is noisey , with the 2.4D Turbo fitted its Quieter than a TDI T:

Acceleration is 400% better, with the Standard 2.4D overtaking is impossibale but with the Turbo you can over take T:

plus the 2.4D Runs great on veg oil that makes it even quieter

you'll get arround 120bhp just by fitting the Turbo and increasing the fuel on the injection pump and winding the boost upto 0.8bar

Now that sounds like a plan would be good to get all the conversions together. I want to get mine back on the rollers to see what it is doing now that I have fitted a decent boost controller (cheep eBay ones are only good as paper weights) and also got the full pp tuning stanless pipe on

hello peeps,

after fitting the turbo last week, really pleased to confirm that the van is now up and running, added an intercooler this weekend. I have a couple of issues that some of you 2.4td veterans may be able to help with.

When my engine was naturally aspirated I fitted an electric lift pump to help the injection pump for when I added veg oil. This however increased the tickover speed.

Since fitting the turbo I have only been able to get 0.4bar max boost. I have adjusted the tickover stopper so that only a single thread is showing and have no more adjustment left.

I adjusted the diesel flow screw in 2 whole turns untill the tickover just starts to pick up.

i have wound up the turbo actuator quite a bit. I have no idea what the factory setting is cos this part of the turbo was undone when i brought it. How much thread do other people have exposed after the wastegate hinge? I have been winding it up but it dont seem to be making any more difference. When I slackened it off, the boost dropped so i wound it back up.

I have taken the electric lift pump off to try to reduce the tickover and turn up the fuel screw a little more. (now at 2 turns from factory setting)

Took it for various short test drives, so far pleased with the results - even at 0.4 bar we have improvements. Cant seem to break the 0.4 bar barrier tho. No black smoke when im boosting, egt gauge dont move off 200 degrees.

If I increase the fuel screw anymore then the engine will be racing when Im ticking over. Is it normal practice to adjust the pump lever on its shaft during this situation?

I have got pics of my install waiting to be uploaded but I seem to remember how to do it. I think my subscription running out may have something to do with it:confused:

Sounds like you need more fuel if the EGT's won't got above 200deg , to get Boost you need fuel T:

i turned the fuel up 1 full turn to get 0.8bar , that was on a pump that had been rebuilt and calibrated so you fuel my have been under fuelling before the Turbo to have to turn it up 2 turns.

just keep an eye on the EGT's gauge when you are increasing the fuel.

I could not get mine up past 0.4 but after I fitted a boost controler and did the acuater bolt up about 1/2 inch from the top I have total control now with the boots controler so just by 1/2 a turn it shouts from .4 to .8 . Maybe u need to adjust the nut more till its over boosting then wind it of till ur happy :)
