Hey,

I know the egr blanking has been discussed widely, but need clarity please.

Let me let you what i have done and then i will ask questions.

>Blanked off both side of the pipe between the egr valve and exhaust manifold and reoved the pipe.
>I then removed the vacuum pipe fro the anti-shudder valve and screwed a bolt into the end of the vacuum pipe to blank.
>The vacuum pipe to the egr valve is still connected.

So the questions:

I understand the blanking and the benifit there of, but do not uderstand why this is resulting in worse fuel economy. My mind tells me that if the engine is breathing clear air it should be more efficient and give better fuel economy.

Is there something i did'nt do and still need to do? What do is do with the vacuum pipes to and from the n75(if that is what it's called) control unit?
Fyi: i am planning to remove the egr valve altogether and inserting an straight pipe, how will this affectthe piping to and from the control unit?

Plese help, as fuel economy is top of my list and if needed the do without te little increase in torque to get the econoy back.

Hi DJaxx
I blanked the egr valve off at the egr end only. I removed and cleaned the valve out as well. I also found that my fuel economy was worse than before I did it. I have taken the blank off and put it back on twice now and monitored the fuel consumption over several fills with it on and off. The fuel economy has always been better with the blank out, :* although the power doesn't seem as good goin up hills.
So I'm very interested to see how it goes for you

That is exactly what i find. The power on the up hill is a bit down, but better fuel economy. I am going to put the vacuum pipe for the shudder valve back and see.

Ps: why does our vans not have mpg/kml function on the cluster? That sucks! Is there any way to add such function?

Hello folks, I`ve just done away with my EGR altogether and replaced it with an Allard straight through kit (ÂŁ85). You remove the full EGR and blank off the exhaust, then the vacuum pipes are just tucked away, although I traced mines back all the way to the valves and pulled them off. If there is no differential in the vacuum at the EGR side then the valves will not operate I think.

Anyway the van pulls better and seems to run quieter as well don`t know about the fuel figures as I only did it last week. I also connected up a boost gauge which works pretty well and adds a nice wee touch to the dash board. Van is a 2003 2.5tdi 88bhp AJT.

Hey man,

You say that you just pulled off all the vacuum pipes at the N75 controller? Please let me know how this goes as my next step was to remove the egr altogether as well, but rethinking it now.

On a different note..... The boost gauge, please if you don't mind add pic of the gauge in the dash as i wanted to do the sae, but could find a suitable space. I would like steal a bit with my eyes!I:T:

Yeah an mpg/kml function would be good but sorry I don't know if they can be fitted. Maybe one of the more auto electrician type guys will see this an give us an answer. It made about 4-5 mpg difference to mine, which I suppose is not a lot but it could mean running out before you find a garage or not. Also better on the wallet over a week/month/year its a good saving I:

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you DJAXX had to take some pictures, hope they are a help to you.

The first one is how the end result looks.........

This is shows where the clear pipe comes from to feed the Turbo Boost Gauge, the by pas pipe has all the parts needed...

Image

The next two show where I have pulled off the vacuum pipes from the old EGR valve, on the fitting instructions for the bypass pipe they said just to leave them tucked away. I can only assume that if there is no difference in the vacuum pressure from the EGR then the valves for these pipes will not activate. Any way my bus runs spot on with no side effects..

The last one is the Turbo Boost Gauge I fitted in the dash...

Hope these are of use to you, cheers T:
