That is correct. Although someone here has manged to fit one I think.
Why would they do that? Or not do that...
I own a Dehler 5.4 now and they were able to fit a shower in, I like the Westfalia's high top but no shower is a big turn off.
They had a lots of space there by the toilet...

I don't know how the Dehler is arranged, but the big issue with a shower is water storage. A 60l tank won't last long for use in a shower, and then you need to be able to contain the waste too. And a shower only really works if you can heat the water, which takes up more space again and needs an appropriate fuel source. And so on.

I think its all about the options. Its a great thing to be able to use shower when you really, really want it.
I just went to the mountains for 4 days and used the shower everyday, for longer excursions I have to be more water conscious.
Optima has the same size of the water tank and 10L boiler.
The size of the bathroom enclosure is similar in both units, I really wonder why not make the whole area water tight and drain it to the gray water tank, make the sink hose extendable and leave the option "to conserve or not to conserve" to the user.
To me personally that's a great disappointment when I look at these units.

The new Club Joker has a diesel-powered heater and shower built-in.

Personally I'm not fussed about not having a shower (my Club doesn't even have a separate compartment for the toilet, but the upside of that is that it's got more floor space than the Exclusive). Each to their own :)

Any word on your adventure to the dark side of pop top peter?

I may be looking elsewhere to but that is still to be confirmed. ...
So....

Hi,
Hope somebody can help!
I'm new to posting on the forum. I've recently acquired a 2002 Westfalia California Exclusive from Germany and am in the excruciatingly tedious process of registering it with DVLA. I have found out today that my first application has been refused because I sent the wrong amount for the VED (road tax) - ÂŁ230. The campervan is the 151 ps version. DVLA say I should pay ÂŁ490 for the year, I disagree, as reading through countless pieces of info on the net, I feel the van should be in the private light goods category.

Does anyone have any experience of this & how much should I pay? (I know DVLA can be quite an immoveable mass when it comes to any disputes!)

One seriously frustrated campervan owner!

I did the same as you and imported one. It's also the 151ps version. Mine is classified as PLG and I pay ÂŁ230 ved. What have DVLA classified yours as? Welcome by the way!!

Got me worried now, I'm just doing the same, what else could they classify it as? ?. Easy to get VED wrong, so fingers crossed. Oh welcome to the forum by the way ?.

Hi,
The DVLA appear to have classified the camper as a diesel car & are taking into consideration the CO2 emissions which are 227grms (just 1 or 2 grms into the highest bracket). I'm sure there has been an error so I will be querying it - the problem is you only ever speak to someone in a call centre!
Reading on the Caravan Club Forum there seems to be a DVLA directive that mentions that campers should be classes as Private Light Goods Class (if under 3500kg weight) & if manufactured before 2012 the CO2 emissions are not taken in to account.
All in all it is really unclear & ambiguous.
I only spoke to someone on the phone at the DVLA about this and am still waiting for the official refusal letter. Not quite sure what my next step will be!

Does anyone have any official info regarding this problem?

Just an update to my ponderings about swapping my Exclusive and a Skoda Estate for a T5 California.....

Well I got one and went away in it for a week, and used it as an everyday car, and although it was close, I decided to stick as I am. Spent a nice few hours moving my camping stuff back into my Westy after selling the T5 yesterday.
Boy oh boy do I appreciate our build quality, and volume of storage space.
I documented my thoughts on the T5 Cali forum if you'd like to read more detail.http://vwcaliforniaclub.com/threads/does-a-t5-cali-beat-a-bigger-camper-and-a-cheap-car-decision-made.10993/

Re: T4 Westfalia California Exclusive -DVLA

Hi,
Just an update on my experiences with the registration process of my self-import Westfalia Cali Exclusive. The documents finally came through today - I now have a registration number! The DVLA in their wisdom decided to classify my camper in the 'Private/Light Goods' category which is a result as the VED is ÂŁ230 a year. This was after the third attempt, it started with ÂŁ490 a year, then ÂŁ 290 & now (thankfully) ÂŁ230 (which is what I originally completed the form for).
Anyway seems to be sorted, I can now start the preparation for our holiday to Northern Spain in 2 weeks!

Won't be doing this again in a hurry!
