First post for new member, hoping someone can give me some info/help? Have started having a problem with the intermittent wiper setting on my T5. When you press the stalk down when the ignition is on, but the engine is off the wiper start continuously as if in speed No.1. Turn teh engine on and they park all okay. Whilst the engine is running and you put the intermittent switch on or press the stalk down they start, but do not do a full sweep and park, they just move about 10-15degrees accross the screen and then stop, then start again with a few more degrees then stop. They will not park at any point, nor will they park when switched to full speed and then to stop, I'm having to jog then into a park position by pressing the stalk down until the parked position is reached. I Have contacted the local VW van center in Peterborough who had a look last week and diagnosed it as teh wiper motor. Whilst I had my doubts that it was the motor (as the motor was working in normal speeds fine) I purchased said motor and fitted it only to be proved correct and that the fault remained as before. Thank god I didn't get them to fit it as I would have been a further ÂŁ250 lighter for a mere 20minute job. So I contacted said 'experts' at the van centre again and asked for a cost for the wiper relay (as this is what I thought it would have been originally). After the person on the phone checked the parts list and after asking numerous questions to the other'experts' around him it appears that there is no relay to control the wipers intermitent setting on a T5. Neither could he tell me what did, whether it be a central control unit , stalk or nothing. I am now faced with having to have the onboard computer read to see what the issue is for what was once a simple fix! I have however found the relay which controls the wipers, but it is soldered into a PCB along with a million other components in a black box behind the dash, nice that!!
What I would like to know, before I have to go to said garage again and leave the van with the 'experts' for a day for them to charge me a fortune to tell me that something is wrong with the wipers, is has anyone seen this before? Better still has anyone come up with a 'fix' for this issue without having to replace everything from the motor back?

Invariably it's the Convenience module/Body control module (J519) under the steering wheel that's at fault. People almost always replace everything else which little success before biting the bullet and buying this dealer only module.
It contains a multitude of relays attached to a printed circuit board and controls various vehicle functions. Don't be tempted to buy second hand as the risk is you'll end up with another duffer!!!
When I bought mine from TPS it was ÂŁ300 + as I have cruise control.

My wipers dont park in the correct position when using the washer jets, they park correctly if using the wipers on any other setting. Is this likely to be the control module as well? Also does anybody know if its possible to code the wipers to return to park when you turn the ignition off?

Thanks Sam

Had an issue where my wipers were randomly acting crazy but only when I turned them on. They would stop and start a lot during the wiping action, and could hear a relay clicking on and off repeatedly under the steering wheel near my right knee (righthand drive vehicle - Australia). This clicking would occur randomly, for random periods of time, but the wipers only acted crazy if I turned them on.

Got an auto sparky to look at it, he found the body control module and pointed out the relay he thought was the problem. Left it with me to fix. He later sent me an SMS with a link to this forum thread. What a guy!

So, today I've replaced the V23084, C2001 A303 relay as suggested in this thread. Fix seems to be successful! Thanks everyone, reading this thread helped a lot. They were easy to find on eBay.com.au, but only from Chinese or European sellers. They're probably all made in China anyway, but I found a reasonable deal for one unit from France! Approximately $20 Antipodean Dineros including freight. I'll sleep better having paid $20 from France rather than $3 from China. Also probably helped some French person pay off their new T6 :D :D :D

So some tips if you decide to replace your V23084, C2001 A303 ...

- took a couple of photos of the connectors so I could put them back in the right places
- I used pointy nose pliers to grip each connector and disconnect it
- I used a metal solder sucker to unsolder the relay
- as I went around to each pad I added a bit of solder then sucked it up
- then I used a bit of stripped wire as desolder braid, because I'm too cheap to buy the proper stuff
- the relay still wouldn't come out, so I used a slotted screwdriver to pry it off the circuit board
- be careful doing that as there's a couple of surface mount components (resistors I think) on the top side
- mostly this pulled the pins out of the relay
- which then enabled me to grip each pin with pointy-nose pliers
- hit it with the soldering iron again, and pull each pin out
- a bit more fresh solder, more sucking, more desolder braid, repeat several times

Voila! Ten clean (enough) holes to push the new relay in to! A bit of solder on each pad, check for any solder bridging, looks clean. Reconnect everything, reconnect the battery, take it for a test drive.

Everything appears to be working, and my wipers aren't acting crazy.

As an additional benefit, the drivers side door (right-hand door, Australia!) wasn't consistently locking / unlocking with the remote, but it appears to be working consistently now!

Thanks everyone!

Good result - I've always found it difficult to get multi-pin relays off a board. It's sometimes easiest to just destroy the component from the top of the board (I use a Dremel-type drill with a small cutting disk) to cut it up so that you can desolder it one pin at a time - but it's never easy...

Just wanted to add another "thank you" for this thread. Just replaced the relay on my 2008 T5 and works fine again now.

I took the old relay apart as well and found burned contacts.

I used a similar method of adding fresh solder, then using a solder sucker to remove most the solder. finally I user some braid to remove the last bits, followed by a wiggle of each pin with some pointy pliers to free them off. the relay fell out after that.

I did take the time to "tin" each hole and re-solder sucker it to clean out any from the holes.

biggest issue I had was needing 3 hands to hold the relay, solder and soldering iron to re-fit.

Thanks.

Have been following these wiper threads for 18 months or so. The wiper motor was US so I replaced that, then the intermittent went, so I put a new column switch on. Then the wipers sometimes worked as ignition switched on and took a few minutes to stop where ever they felt like. Replaced the relay in the BCU, still the same. Got in touch with VW who wanted ÂŁ660 pus VAT to put a new BCU in and code to original!!! I was willing to put up with the problem after that. Anyway, bit the bullet a few days ago and bought a used unit with the same number (wasn't sure if any other later letter suffix ones would work, wasn't sure that the used one with same part no. would work either). As it happens, fitted the used unit today and all is working, no re coding required either. Happy days.

The problem is that Tyco no longer make a compatible part for the V23084 range, as far as I can tell. You can buy Chinese-made replacements from Ebay - see the last page of this thread:

I've no idea what the quality will be like. With that sort of Chinese made part, the quality could be anything from excellent to "fit for the bin" and there's no real way to know other than by trying it and seeing if it lasts.
