AXD Exhaust manifold removal

Hi all,

Can the exhaust manifold actually be removed leaving the turbo/exhaust in place? All the manifold removal threads I've read involve turbo removal, but no one explains why, unless, of course it's because they are swapping the turbo/replacing the turbo oil gasket as well. I can see the outlet from the compressor is long and runs past the manifold, is this in the way? Anyone done this?

The manifold fouls the turbo as it comes off. You can unbolt the turbo and lay it back, then the manifold will clear but there's not much point. It's good to have the turbo fully off so you can check it and clean up the block and the EGR faces properly.

You don;t need 3 pairs of hands as there's not a lot of room behind the turbo Even if you did fit the turbo loosely to the manifold before refitting it won't go in and the turbo will need to be removed to get to port 2 bottom exhaust stud to be able to get the nut on.
The easiest is to remove the rear engine mount to make a bit more room to get to the oil flange mounting bolts under the turbo :)
