Looks like someone has done a work around instead of fitting a replacement 109. Do you have a spare key and have you tried it?

While we have a spare key, really not sure where it is. It just looks like a plain key, but by your comment I'm guessing there is a chip in it?
Are you thinking immobiliser?

Sorry, can you confirm engine model please?

Of course, should've added that at the start. It is ACV.

I'm now on a misson to find the spare key. My key does indeed have a chip in it. I popped into Timpson's this morning and they put it in their machine. It identified that it had a chip in it but the lass said that it wouldn't confirm if it was working or not, but surely if the machine recognises a chip, it means some sort of signal is readable?

I guess I really need to find that spare key then. In the meantime I suppose I'll check the wiring in/around the ignition to see if there is anything obviously out of place, but pretty sure it is a wiring issue elsewhere...

i have a similar issue with my 2001 1.9TD (1000). (i am not technical or mechanical but i can read and am willing to give it a go)

I broke down last weekend (lost power on a roundabout). Engine would crank but not start. RAC arrived, by-passed fuel solenoid to get her started. (it worked), he then checked Fuse 15 and it had blown. Fuse replaced and we were on our way.

this weekend she managed a road trip from Essex to Newcastle and back with no issues.

Reversed her out of the drive this morning and she cut out. same symptoms as last weekend. Changed the fuse 15, no joy. also noticed that glow plug lights were out.....

having read this thread today i though, obvious its Relay No 3 (109), checks the fuse box (via an online idiots guide) and hmmm, no relay in No 3.

any clues why there would be no 109 relay and more importantly any clues to my current issue.

Thanks in advance.

Spoke to the guys at the garage today when I dropped of my Polo for an MOT. They tell me that it would still start with an unchipped key, but would then cut out (still not found my spare!)
They have then suggested putting 12v straight to the fuel solenoid to see if it would start - it would not!!

Any other suggestions???

B_G_M it seems that not all vans have a 109 relay - not sure why?
Only thing you can do is follow the guide in the first post - if you are lucky it is a break in a wire in the loom going across the front of the engine..

Thanks for all the knowledge so far. Can juno across 109 to start. Currently chasing and testing for earth wire breakage. Just wondered if white plug in centre of picture is supposed to be free or connected to something? Just got to try and load pic.

Just wanna thank cyclist rob and upspex for great info on this issue.
Just finished and yep, same problem, the black and white small wire was broken, the insulation was intact but the wire inside had eroded. Located in inside heat shielding. I replaced the whole wire from fuse box to ECU because found an earlier repair by previous owner, thought don’t want it to happen again. Oh and I also ripped out all of the corrugated wire loom cover, cleaned up wires and covered with proper car wire cloth tape. She now starts and has lovely clean and tidy wiring!!

Again many thanks to cyclists rob and upspex’s knowledge, life savers!!

Ok, I've just read ALL 36 pages  I have my fuel solenoid hard wired with a switch from the battery and thought it was time to revisit this problem.
I wired the two terminals on the 109relay and hey presto the van started without the need for the solenoid switch, maybe my imagination but the engine sounded better too :*
Now here's a thing, I may have switched the solenoid switch on sometime during this process and now it struggles to turn over and run properly using only the wire trick. I'm going to check the fuses in a mo'....
I have now removed the wire and back to the hotwire from the battery bodge I:
I think it's time to try and find that break in the white/black wire.....
If I replace the whole length to the ecu do I splice in as near as possible or is there a way of replacing within the plug?
Wish me luck, France in six days.........

I've just spent two hours meticulously going through all the tests mentioned and it still won't work without the hotwire to the solenoid.
:bhd :bhd :bhd

Hi all running an AJT 2.5 Topaz Autosleeper and it has never missed a beat until recently. I have just started to experienced what feels like a very short transmission jolt when driving often at a steady state speed. I have but it down to a very short complete engine cut hence I have ended up here.

I am about to start diagnosing the 109 relay / supply and switched earth black and white wire.

Before I commence can anyone point me to a wiring diagram showing that shows the 109 relay and ecu connections.

Many Thanks

Zeberdy

I'm getting to the point now where I'm considering a completely different vehicle..... ffs I cannot find the root cause of this ongoing problem, would a dodgy ignition switch be the answer?
