Bypassing the relay does not mean this is the prob had 2 2.5 tdis in the last 4 weeks with same fault. Both of them run with link on relay. But there fault was a broken black wire between fuse box and Ecu. Both were under master cylinder as it had worn through it.

More stupid questions

I checked all the fuses and they're all good.

Don't I just need a new relay then if bypassing it makes it start?

Is it safe to drive with the wire bypassing the relay as I have no access to another vehicle tomorrow?
It's probably not the relay, it will more than likely be one of the feeds to it, such as the one that goes from G1 7 to ECU as they are known to go.

It's really good news you have now got the van running, but I would go through everything in the first post to find out what the exact problem is, i'd start by checking what feeds are at the relay socket with a multimeter and go from there, then you can rule out whether it's the relay at fault or the supply to the relay T:

Cheers folks - is it safe to drive with the bypass link in the relay though?

I need the van tomorrow but don't want to nalls it up!

Will leaving the wire in to bypass the relay drain the battery or can it be left in situ till I have time to sort out the root cause?

Yes it's safe and possibly depending whether you used a switched live or not, check with a meter and keys out, if not live you're fine :)

Can I just say thanks to Cyclist Rob and all the other posters for the helpful input. You have saved me,
and others no doubt, time, money and frustration.

Just went to drive van this morning and no light again.

Are there any fuses in engine bay fuse box I need to look at?
on last fix, it worked although nothing was technically fixed, I just took apart and reassembled.

most annoying as leisure battery in engine bay so ecu under the battery tray and everything is difficult to get out.

I am sure the relay was working, according to the tests.

inclined to think problem in engine bay.

So This morning I quickly tried popping the top off relay and closing manually. Nothing still so need to five back under the engine bay. Wish me luck!

Hi,

Just like to know if anyone can identify any of these relays on my van.Im not sure how to upload a photo but the numbers on relays are.
18,99,104,53 and 137. I noticed on a lot of threads people keep talking about relay 109 but this relay is not on my van.Basically the van wont start. With key in ignition turned on the normal lights come on dash, turn key no click but heater icon lights up goes out and then after a few secs the relay for heater plugs clicks. about 3 days ago the van was parked up overnight and in morning the engine would turn over but would not fire, so checked it from filter which is about 2 months old checked pipes from tank up to pump still no good just would not fire.Next day the same but played around with plugs etc on injector pump and it fired up ok.Drove all day ok.Next morning the same as before.Played with connections on pump still no good.squirted easy start in to filter and it went, drove for day ok but in the evening on way home I noticed when I tried to start it on my last call it did nothing when I turned key but only for a split second so just carried on heading for home but stopped outside my local shop to get stuff but when I came out and tried it completely dead. All the lights on dash but dead when you turn key.Does anyone have any ideas.would be most grateful.

Cheers.

Chris.

Hi,
Just to introduce myself as a newbie but have a bit of a problem my name is Chris and I live in sunny Ireland and I wish all a merry xmas.*<:)>

Well I would like to say Thanks to Cyclist Rob I have this problem at the moment and although I had a friend come round with his diagnostic code reader I didn't have a clue where to start but hopefully this will point me in the right direction.
As this is the first time I have used the Forum EVER I will be returning for more tips when the problems arise.
Thanks Again

I've replaced my 109 relay to no avail - I keep getting life out of the old girl during the fix and then nothing when everything is back together - GRRRR!!!

I think it may be down to the wiring somewhere but proving a nightmare to locate any faults.

What am I looking for on the engine bay fuse box? Am I right in that it is the 60amp fuse? If this was not feeding power off to the glow plugs could that be the source of a lack of glow light?

Dave

Now we check the continuity of the circuit inside the fuse box. Remove relay 109, put one wire of the multi-meter in relay hole #5 (relay pin85) to pin 7 in terminal G7. (Make sure you on right pin)

Not sure on the above statement? Been working away through the how to and everything brilliant to this point....

Where is terminal g7? Is that the white plug g1 but just a typo? Cheers

It is where the white plug goes in. You are checking there is a connection from the pin on the relay to the pin the plug goes into.

As I couldn't see the back of the fuse box I did it by feel and checked each one until I found the right one. If this is the point of failure then none will prove any continuity.

cheers,

the bridged wire across the terminals of realy worked so know its a break somewhere....

ive checked that there is continuity between black/white, (in corrugated plastic loom up at servo), and the white plug at back of fuse box

also continuity between same black and white wire at the servo, and the point in my photo below the water bottle, (found the black/white wire, its held out with screwdriver holding it put) so no breakages over engine .....which i was hoping it would be...

so can i ask.......am i reading this right?....
from the point above- does wire go to yellow/black on ecu plug as highlighted in photo 10?

Hi i have had same problem and now fixed after reading cyclist robs thread.
Take the cover of the plug that goes in to the ecu carfully, you will see the b/w wire.
You can see directly were it is going 7th pin put a wire in the hole or cut the b/w wire
about inch an a half and test it from there it will take to long to follow wire all way
through the harnes.
I cut the wire as it came out of bulk head and solderd a wire from there to ecu plug,
using a bit of conduit to protect the wire. good look and thanks to cyclist rob for the info.

Black and white goes into ecu, as does yellow and black, but that goes via a fuse? As I read it anyway. My fault appears to be in ecu power supply. Hopefully.

Good luck

No it's dead easy. Takes about 15 minutes to do tops. Just take a picture front and back for reference. The plugs on the back will only go into the right sockets but it's good to have a picture to work from.

Hello t4forum I'm new to the forum and my first time to write on here. Does this method apply to 1.9td t4 as I have a similar problem?

I will try to post something over the weekend to see if anyone can help.

Thanks all
Wayne *<:)>

god darn it.............

got a 2nd hand fusebox, dismantled it all, transfered across (tested new fusebox first) same dam problem

tested the first fusebox, turned out it was bloody ok in first place.

the van is driving on the wire in the realy trick, but wont put glowplug light on without it.

ive tested

the relay.................................................check
the pathway from relay to g1 plug............ check
g1 plug to beyond bulkhead......................check
bulkhead black and white wire to black and white below water resevoir.................. check

cant figure out where im supposed to find continuity from black and white wire below the resevoir to the point on ecu plug. it really is the only thing left.........

is it???
