Hello t4forum I'm new to the forum and my first time to write on here.
Does this method apply to 1.9td t4 as I have a similar problem?
I will try to post something over the weekend to see if anyone can help
Thanks all

Welcome Wayne. No mate this only applies to 2.5 TDI engines

Getting very frustrated with my problem - thought I had it sorted until went to put everything back together for the third time and it went again!

Going to try complete replacement/rerouting black and white wire next weekend to see if there is an intermittent break I can't see.

Failing that, Martyn - do you do home visits? On the brink of employing a true professional to sort my sorry little mess out!

Take the cap of the top of the plug that goes in to the ecu stip a bit of the b/w wire to reveal the copper then put a wire in to the g1 plug and test it to see if it buzzes on your tester if not replase the wire.

I did that but then after that and doing numerous other steps from page 1, the van came back to life. Problem with that is, as an intermittent fault (Although 95% not working over working) it seems to spark to life a bit more readily with both batteries out.

Therefore I am getting more and more convinced it is the black and white wire so going to run a second wire through replacing it. Problem with this is it runs through a section with heat shielding on and not sure how to get that off. Could I run it through the bulk head and across the dash instead?

Dave

Went at this again today and replaced black and white wire with another wire from near ECU to the fuse box plug. Soldered it in with heat shrink and routed through the bulk head on the battery side and up through the dash.

Kept testing it as I reassembled and apart from the battery being a little 'bruised' I'll give it a few laps of the block tomorrow night to check. Fingers crossed.

Gave up on mine, 1 autospark, and 60quid later turned out it was the only bit I couldn't check, between ecu plug and gearbox there was a break somewhere. Just glad it got sorted 8)

Was it the same symptoms as above? Was yours intermittent? This is my last attempt before I get the professionals in!

Fingers crossed it'll work though

Well I had to jump the van as battery worn out by too much activity and no running!

But... It flipping worked. Hit every bump and jolt on way to shops to check it and seems fine. If that was it my black and white wire either failed without external break or broke where I couldn't get to it.

I really really hope this is my last ever post on this thread! Unless others need help in which case am I the one to help? Probably not!

Thanks all.

Dave

If 12V there, take the removed relay 109, there should be a little circuit diagram on the side, get a small length of wire and join it to terminal 30 then terminal 87, so you got a small loop, basically you bypass the switch in the relay. Put the relay back in the fuse block/box.
Put in key and see if the glow plug light comes on and try starting.
IF it works it be relay 109 OR relay (fuse) box OR wiring.
Can someone tell me if it is safe to leave this loop in place as a temporary measure until I can investigate further?
Cheers

I'm going through a similar problem at the minute and have been told to remove the wire when the van is not in use. Since your post, have you had any luck in fixing the fault? I'm trying to locate a good auto electrician to have a look at my van

Hi,
I have read this thread and found it very useful. Thankyou cyclist rob.

I to have had this problem. I started to follow the checklist detailed at the start of this thread to eliminate each device. The relay was fine and so was the wires in the back of the fuse box. I then came to check the continuity of both the fuse box and black/white wire to ecu. When I unplugged the long plug on the ecu I found it very damp inside and the pins in the socket were starting to corrode. On closer examination I found pin 18 to be missing (corroded/broke off).
I know that the best thing for me to do is to find another ecu, which isn't gonna be cheap (either by breakers yards or possibly getting it fixed).

My question is, what does the black/white wire actually do? Because if I put a wire to earth and onto relay 109 no85 it starts fine. I'm just wondering if I did a mod on it and left it like that, would it be ok?

Cheers Steve.

The black white wire is the negative from the ECU to activate 109 so what you have done is basically replicate this signal from the ECU. I can't imagine that it would be a problem under normal circumstances but it would mean that the ECU would no longer have control over things if something else went wrong.

Thanks for a quick response Martyn. As always, I knew I could rely on you replying:)
So I've decided to send it off to get it repaired. ÂŁ150 + vat. They said they can replace the multi pin socket. Hopefully this will sort it once and for all.

Cheers, Steve.

Probably the wrong thought, but by putting an earth wire onto pin 85, would that not leave the glowplugs powered at all times and kill the battery ( in the same way as putting a wire loop across the relay pins?
